So what's the real story behind AMH?

Hi there

I've had interesting views on AMH - when I asked my gynacologist about low AMH - he told me categorically that "this test is so new it's not worth the paper it's written on".  He says that its the "best news for all medical practices patients now panic and think they will never get pregnant" so they have so many new referrals due to this test.  I suppose from my point of view, I think if you are ovulating once a month - that's one egg that could potentially be fertilised and there is NO TEST IN THE WORLD that can tell you the quality of the egg at this stage.  There's too much fear around this test and it's not proven.  I think we need to return to good old medical techniques, it worked for other generations, why do we doubt it, healthy ovarias + regular cycle + visibility of some follicles on the scan = that's nature and it works!  Good luck everyone!  Sometimes we can just read too much into a test, it's one of many, many factors and my doctor (top one in London) says that he sees thousands of patients with extremely low AMH who are happily pregnant.  How does that work with this silly AMH test?  Sounds like a money making scheme to me, sorry for being cynical.  x

I have had my AMH tested six times in the last two months because they can't understand why it is fluctuating so much. It has been 11, 5, 2.8, 3.2 , 0.5 - in random order. I don't trust this test.

Thanks for your posting! I just got the "low AMH" news, too.
Bummer. But I'm not going to give up!
Anything is, the fertility clinic I go to (in Coventry) offers nothing for women with "Low AMH" except an 'I'm so sorry' and the "have you considered donor eggs" speech.
Thanks for posting -- and keep the faith!!

My RE has 5 offices and does a lot of leading research. I volunteered for the AMH study. But they were clear that the results would not really benefit me, rather they would be used in compilation with other factors to help other women down the line. My number was not good - do not remember it. But it was "consistent with my FSH and my age".

I think MLB1234 knows more about it.

Hi MDGreaves

It's supposedly a test of your ovarian reserve (i.e. number of eggs left) - however it's a new test and only 70% accurate.  From my point of view it makes me totally mad that supposed "experts" tell young or youngish women that they have a poor chance of fertility when every one of their "remaining eggs" can be 100% top quality and perfect for pregnancy.  I just want to say that I have witnessed from the experts the number of happily pregnant women with very, very low levels of AMH and they are in the thousands not even hundreds.  Trust in old medicine, why shouldn't you have a quality egg released every time you ovulate.  And what if you were in the 30% of people where this test is unreliable....all this worry for nothing.  I do think acupuncture and herbal medicine and limiting stress if at all possible is all we can do, the rest....as for all women is luck. x

Well, I will give you my experience with AMH.  Mine was .7 or .07 cant remember exactly which.  It was on the low side of normal.  We have been trying for about a year now, with no results. I was ovulating every month but nothing was happening.  I also had low progesterone.  I got on meds. and after taking them one cycle, I got a BFP.  The AMH and my progesterone were the only two things off.  So I feel like its a useful test but in combination with other tests to get a total picture.(I had AMH, FSH, Progesterone, etc.)  I do agree if you just have the AMH and nothing else and try to judge from that alone, its not accurate. Just my 2 cents.
