some places offers ivf for less money if you are a cash pay patient, we paid a flat fee of 6800, that included all of the monitoring, etc... We were able to get most of our drugs thru serono compassionate care, this saved us a chunk of money- as gonal-f is expensive. The program will provide, the drugs(certain drugs) for one try if you are approved thru their program. The rest of the drugs needed were about 700-800 for our cycle. The clinic said the average drug cost is about $3000.

There's a BIG difference in price, as IUIs only require sperm to be collected and then inserted through a catheter through the cervix; while IVF requires a LOT of monitoring, more days of medication and usually much more expensive medications, plus retrieval of the eggs (under general anesthesia), lab time as the eggs and sperm fertilize and embryos grow, then transfer of a couple (or so) good embryos a few days later (the transfer is actually very similar to the IUI, using a catheter through the cervix).

The cost of an IUI really depends on the meds they put you on, but since they generally don't want you to produce too many follicles (to avoid risk of high-order multiples), a low-cost drug like clomid is probably the most common. Clomid can be bought through Walmart's low-cost generic list for less than $10. The doctor fees depends on how much monitoring they want to do and your doctor's regular rates.

IVF, on the other hand, usually costs about $10,000 and up. Partially because there's a lot of monitoring and procedures involved, and partially because IVF meds are VERY expensive!

Of course, it also depends on your health coverage. Some actually cover fertility procedures...but unfortunately most don't.

Hope that helps.

:-)
