Hello,
I am now 38 years old and was just a bit younger than you (I was 25 yrs) when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. My husband and I also have three children (we only had one when I was diagnosed). So, please know that you are not alone...and, I promise, your quality of life CAN and WILL improve with the proper treatment/exercise regime and life-style choices. I know the despair you are feeling right now...let's hope we can help alleviate some of that!!
As the posters above have already said, finding the right course of treatment is not something that happens overnight. My doctor and I work together to tweak my treatment plan whenever it is necessary to do so. Like many fibro sufferers, I have numerous other medical issues, so my treatment must cover the overlapping problems. Over the years, I have taken quite a few different medications, done LOTS of physical therapy, and been referred to several specialists (many were necessary in order to rule out other possible conditions before my fibromyalgia diagnosis).
I currently take Savella (an antidepressant specifically for fibromyalgia) and Vicodin 7.5/750 3x daily for my fibromyalgia pain. As bamabred said, opioids can be very addictive - I did not begin taking opioids for my body pain until about 4 years ago. Before that I had some for migraines, but only took them sparingly. I used OTC pain killers, Ultram, Vioxx (until it was outlawed), etc... When my back pain became unmanageable, my physician sent me to a pain management clinic. The doctor there did a thorough work up and wrote a treatment plan, including the Vicodin. My regular doctor implements the plan, as I am not comfortable going to too many different doctors - there is too much risk of one of them prescribing something that is contraindicated with my other meds AND because I do NOT want to EVER be viewed as someone who "doctor shops"!
As I said, I have some overlapping medical issues. One of my problems has been my knees - I was a gymnast for 10 years, but never knew how much damage I had done to them. When they got so bad about 5 years ago that I could barely walk, the orthopedic specialist did an MRI and found that each meniscus was torn, the cartilage was shredded, and there was significant arthritic bone in BOTH knees. After surgery in both knees to repair all the above problems, as well as Euflexa injections (and losing about 40 pounds), I have NO problems with my knees!
You talked about the severe pain in your knees. Have you had an orthopedic specialist take a look at them? Has a back specialist examined you for the pain in your lower back? Where else is your pain? Was it a general practitioner who diagnosed your fibromyalgia and prescribed the Neurontin (not that a GP can't diagnosis it - that is how mine was identified)? Have you been to a pain management specialist?
Also, have you told your doctor how LOW you are feeling, as well? As I said, I take an antidepressant that is specifically for fibro patients - it not only helps with serotonin levels, it also helps with pain. If you are feeling overwhelmed and anxious, it can actually cause you to have more pain. It might not hurt to talk to your doctor about it.
I hope this has helped a little. My mother was diagnosed a few years before me, so we have had each other in this. NO ONE should have to go through this all alone...remember, everyone in this forum is here for the same reason - you are NOT alone!!
Please check back in...
~Peace & Blessings~
Hey hi,fibro. is very painful(to me anyway) i just turned 50 and have other med. problems also, but i have found that nerotin helps alot,it takes a while to get in your system,i take 600 mg. 3x a day, also tramodol also helps but a few find it addictive, which it is.With that being said you may need to get into pain mangement if the pain is t bad to deal with everyday.BUT be carefull opiates(pain pills) are very, very, addictive. There is a fourm on here just for that, best of luck, take care. :) Danny
I just wanted to give you a note of support. I was 25 and a young mother when I first got ill. It took a few years to find a combo that really worked for me.
It does get better in time. Although it never goes away. Yoga is one of the most beneficial things I use.
Hi, I feel your pain, I haven't been diagnosed with anything yet, but have a list the length of my arm which all look towards symptoms of fibro - I am 34! Have suffered with this for years and sick of visiting the doctor to be made to look like a hypercondriact? I used to be so well and fit, ran cross country and everything, this has all happened since I had glandular fever when I was 21, have posted in forums in here but yet to have a reply, so just a short note to let you know I know how your feel, especially trying to look after a family :( x
