what should i do now

i was told i had fibromyalgia a few years ago, after i had a bad car accident. i was put on some heavy things at first,a fenyntol patch.....i stopped that real quick....i was always wacked. then i was on percocet....i hated those to. After a few different drugs I was put on demerol,I HAD THOSE BEFORE FOR GALLSTONES...WITH NO PROBLEMS! A few years have gone by and over this time i have had 3 different docs....most of them went on to bigger things...other than family practise. All of them have given me demerol for my pain....my family doc now...who i am seeing over 3 yrs now, also has been giving me demerol. But now all of a sudden he has been cutting down my demerol and trying me with other non narcotic drugs. These have proven to be totally uneffective for my pain control. So now im down to 40 demerol every two weeks, from 70 every 2 weeks.I know my doc means well, but im really going through it here! To be honest I dont know if im really even ready to stop the demerol at this point! What can i do or say to my doc....or what other choice to I have.....I really am at a lose right now.

Hi, I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia 1yr ago 6 months after gall bladder surgery. I was ill for 1 1/2 years before that. My current Endocrinologist has found the cause of my fibromyalgia. She believes it is caused by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when for some unknown reason your body becomes unable to use the insulin your body produces. Insulin breaks down the glucose in the body after eating. If the body does not get enough glucose then you suffer from all of the fibro symptoms (chronic sore muscles especially after physical activity, brain fog, fatigue and so on. In order to fix this my doctor put me on a strict diet of no sugar, no caffeine, complex carbs only (brown rice, beans, whole grain breads, triskets), 5-6 small meals a day that must have at least 20 mg of carbs or less, 10 mg of protein or less (protein must always be half of carbs), veggies, fruit (in small amounts) and 30 min. of mild exercise every day (like walking). The diet and exercise helped but didn't fix the problem. She put me on a medication called metformin. This medication helps your body to become more sensitive to insulin. In order to recover from fibromyalgia you have to be strict about your diet, exercise and medication if needed. I am half way to my old self again. With another increase in the medication I should be feeling great. Good Luck

Try an acupuncturist  it has helped a lot of people I know.  There was no way I was going to allow a doctor to put my mum on a narcotic drug.(my mum was very bad with Fibro) Find yourself a good natural-path and acupuncturist see if it helps. Good Luck don't give up. HUGS

Wow!  You really have been through a lot... HUGS!!

Have you considered trying to find a Dr that specializes in Pain Management?  Or a Rheumetologist (sp?)?

You might be better served by using a Dr that is more experienced with your types of pain and medication issues?   There are a lot of different thoughts in the medical profession as to which medications are best for Fibro and there are just as many different reactions to them....

Best of luck with whatever you try...there are lots of folks on this board that may be able to offer you some great advise regaring pain management.
