extreme foot pain after major surgery

Three weeks ago I had a 12 hour double breast reconstuction surgery (DIEP) following chemo and radiation six months earlier.  As I was coming out of the anesthesia the only pain I felt was extreme pain in my left foot.  During my recovery the surgery areas have been realitively pain free, being controled with pain killers.  My foot has been partialy controlled but now that I am off of many of the strong drugs my foot is still very painful.

In the hospital I was checked for blood clots in my leg and gout.  Nothing was found.  It was also suspected that I had experienced dropped foot.  I had neuropothy in my feet before the surgery due to chemo but it had reduced to a numbness in my toes and managable pain on the bottom of my feet.

The current pain is extreme aching in the ankle and sharp pain on the bottom of my foot. Both feet are involved but the left is the worst. On top of my foot almost half way between my ankle and toes I have a bump that comes and goes it is especialy painful radiating into the foot.  My ankles do swell on occasion but usualy with a water pill that goes away.  The pain is at its highest at night.

I am amazed at how the overall surgery went but the real problem area was not even involved.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

The bump on your foot that comes and goes may involve the nerves that govern your foot.  This entrapment could cause pain to the foot.  Where is the pain on the bottom of the foot.  It is painful only when walking or at all times?

I have an appointment with a podiatrist tomorrow.  Obviously my surgeon has thrown her hands up as to, she didn't work on that part of the body.  My cancer doctors sent me to a pain specialist thinking that something has magnified my nueropothy from the chemo and will subside with time.   I guess I will get some information tomorrow.
