Acid Reflux

Hi, I am 31 years old. I had gastritis end of September last year and since then have had daily acid reflux, I wake up with a sour taste of acid and then have heartburn and pain in my esophagus in the morning which progressively gets worse through the day. My GP put me on Omeprazole 40mg a day and I have been on it for 2 months but I am still getting daily acid reflux. My GP also prescribed Metoclopramide which seems to help a little. I have cut out anything that might trigger it - I don t drink alcohol or any caffeine and I don t eat spicy or acidic foods. It s really getting me down because it just seems relentless. Is there anything else I can do to help my condition? I have had a barium swallow which was clear apart from showing reflux. Is this something that I am stuck with because I am really struggling with it? Louise

Thank you for replying. I am on the waiting list for an endoscopy but have been told it can be a long wait. I take the domperidone 1/2 hour before meals but I didn't realise that the omeprazole is supposed to be taken 1/2 to 1 hour prior to meal - I will try that today.

I don't think extra pillows will help, usually when one is asleep you defeat the raised effect of pillows.  Raising the head of the bed is a better idea, in my opinion.  Also, you might ask for an Endoscopy procedure which is the gold star see what is happening.  It is also extremely important to take your medication exactly as prescribed.  It generally must be taken 1/2 to 1 hour prior to the meal.  If taken randomly, it will just make expensive urine and have no effect.

Thank you for replying so quickly. No I've not been diagnosed with IBS or Stress - but I suppose I am getting stressed about the daily acid reflux, worrying that it's not going away and that the medication does not seem to be helping much.

I have been restricting my diet and I walk my dogs for an hour every day - grateful for any advice & tips for dealing with acid reflux. Will try extra pillows to elevate my head at night.
