HIATAL HERNIA SURGERY

I am having surgery to repair a Hiatal Hernia. Has anyone had this done recently? What can I expect? Is it in and out surgery, how long were you out of work, what could you eat, etc.?

Yip, sorry, Flycaster is correct on the 10days out of work.  I didn't work at that stage and my job was house cleaning at home and I booked myself off for 6 weeks :)

I had the full Nissen Fundoplication in 2009, I think, and it was a complete success.  That said, I did exactly what Smiley2000 did, I followed the diet exactly as prescribed.  Successful recovery, I think is going to depend on your ability to follow the diet.  If you rush eating solid foods you probably will have a difficult recovery.

Since the procedure, I haven't had any kind of an antacid.  That said, I followed the recovery diet exactly as prescribed.  You should be able to go back to work in about ten days, in my opinion, but only if you follow the dietary guidelines.

Let us know how you recover.

Hi there,

I am glad you have found this Community and some more Members will come and give some advice shortly :)

I had the Nissen Fundo surgery in Feb. 2012.  I have Barret's Esophagus due to a hypotensive LES and I was on maximal medication (Nexium 80mg and had a lot of tests pre-op) still in my 30's so the GI Doc recommended that I had a partial Fundoplication.

Hospital stay:  4 days
Out of work:  6 weeks
Diet:  around 6-8 weeks.

The Hiatal hernia and wrap will be done via 4 small holes.  It is really amazing what they can do these days!  You can Youtube a few of these Lap Nissen Fundo surgeries.

The surgery really worked for me.  I'll be on lifelong surveillance due to the BE but I feel heaps better post-op.

The Diet is really vital to the success of the operation.  You'll be on a liquid diet, then soft foods and solids will only be introduced after 6-8 weeks.  Make sure that you get dietary advice from your Surgeon before you're discharged.

If there is anything else you would like to know or need support, feel free to ask :)

All the best!  and let us know when your surgery date is.

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

I have not had this surgery and there are a few on here that have had it with success and a few that  did not have the outcome they expected.

In case u do not get replies from those that had this surgery use the search this community feature to pull up older threads on this topic, keep in mind some of the members that may have commented in the older thread may no longer be active,..,..so look to the dates to see when they posted and then send them a PM (private message) to let them know someone is trying to make contact.
