My major Insurance Co is dropping coverage for all PPI's in 2012!

Uniform Medical is not going to cover any PPI's in 2012. They stated that this is because they have a policy that any drug that has an equivilent OTC will not be covered. Can you believe it!
I need to some good references and examples of medical appeal letters. I had a Nissin back in 2004 for hiatal hernia and have taken 2 40mg Nexium a day since. I have a slight scarred esophagus and only occasional  breakthrough at night. My ergo-temperpedic bed has been a blessing for my occasional breakthrough acid reflux at night.
I have joked with my Dr. that if there was a natural disaster in my area, I would grab my Nexium and my cat and flee.
That is how important this medication is to me.
If anyone has any examples of letters of appeal that have worked, I would really appreciate some guidance. I am scared to death.
thanks,
smaustin

Hi, I am in agreement with Flycaster...I had a time when I did not have insurance and my pharmacist told me about a generic that was less then what  my co-pay was for the RX...so, I made out better not having the insurance for that med, and when I got coverage never asked for a RX for the med as I now use the OTC generics when needed.

I also stepped off the meds slowly as Flycaster is asking u if that was a consideration....many times we get used to the med and never consider stopping them, but long term use of these meds r not good for us, so do talk to ur Dr, and make sure u r eating healthy , drinking plenty of water and exercise .

I think insurance companies are dropping many drugs because acceptable generic equivalents are available, as is the case with Nexium (Esomeprazole).  The generic version of the drug will work very well for you.  I'm betting you will be just fine.

I wonder if you have considered discussing tapering off/discontinuing Nexium/Esomeprazole and see what happens.  After having the Nissen Fundoplication surgery I was able to discontinue taking the drug and have been symptom free.
