Really Bad GERD

Hi.....

For the last four years (after Gallbladder removal) I have really bad acid reflux. Last month I went for the 24 PH Test and the specialist told me that I have "bad acid reflux" (normal score would be between 21-22, I scored 46-47). I had a reflux every 6 minutes while standing. I've been  taking Nexium for 6 months now. He wants me to continue the Nexium, twice a day for 6 weeks. I was ok for 1 week and now it's all coming back (pain and heartburn). If medication don't help, is surgery the cure??
Thanks!!

Sorry there's a typo.... H2 blocker (HII same thing ) not lick...pepcid.....

pepcid is a histamine blocker where prilosec is a proton pump inhibator (PPI)

Sorry about the typo and the confusion

HI...Ur dr should monitor u and that is very long term that the meds can cause malabsorbtion.I have been on and off these meds for yrs and during my blood work have not found this to be an issue.

If u take this med and try diet changes it is possible to stop the meds for months or yrs at a time....they r not a life sentance. Most meds have side effects listed, but not all the side effects occur to the person using them. Let ur dr know ur concerns and I am sure he /she will keep a close eye on ur levels of iron ect.

Thank you Selma.

I read in the newspaper this morning that if someone takes acid reflux medication it may lead to "Iron-deficiency anemia". Should I be worried??

Hi...it is possible that this med does not work for u. Tell ur dr it doesn't work and ask if he can suggest another med.
Nexium is a PPI ( proton pump inhibator) u may want to try a H2 blocker or HII lick the RX streghtn of pepcid.

Also watch ur diet and make the lifestyle changes doing all of this can help the meds work better. Keeping a journal also helps u know ur trigger foods.

Surgery is always a last option.
