concerned...

I have a couple of issues, and I'm not sure if they are related or not. When I eat, certain foods will get "stuck" at what seems to be the opening of my stomach. On Halloween, a piece of BREAD got "stuck"...for 3 days...causing severe dry heaving , every 3 to 5 minutes,(with NO stomach contents at all) and alot of pain. It eventually dislodged after I sipped some pop, then I vomitted over 2 litres of green bile. It felt as if my whole GI system was "stauled" for those 3 days.Once the piece of bread came out, and I had received some gravol and ALOT of morphine, I finally felt better. Since then, I have only eaten puddings, yogourt and other soft foods. My other GI issue, is that I often wake up at night, choking on vomit that has been aspirated into my lungs, causing coughing and shortness of breath. Could these 2 symptoms be related in some way? I had a barium swallow, which came out normal. I don't have issues with liquids, unless there is already a blockage, which in that instance gets shot right out my mouth..again, with NO stomach contents...Anyone have any ideas on what could be happening or what I can do?

Hi,
Your symptoms are suggestive of Achalasia cardia.
This is a condition in which the lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax during swallowing.
Barium swallow could diagnose this.
But since  BS was normal, I would suggest you undergo esophageal manometry test and upper GI endoscopy for evaluation.

I am so sorry you are going though this.  I have had and still have a lot of stomach issues all relating to GERD.  I have woken up in the middle of the night with a little food coming up.  I also have some problems swallowing food at times.  It feels like it gets stuck or that food is still in the back of my throat.  Have you been to a Gastrointerologist?  Have you had a EDG done where they put you to sleep and look down your throat?  I think if you have't you should to see what's going on.  You could have a blockage that is not allowing food to travel right or maybe also having GERD where your food is coming back up.  I assume you went to the hospital since you said you got morphine.  Please let me know how you are doing.
