Extremly high Gamma GT

I have epilepsy which is treated with Tegretol.

Last check shows that:

AST is 27,0
ALT is 59,0
Gamma GT 355,0 (!!!)

Can Tegretol cause this?

I'm sorry to hear about your epilepsy.  I've got it, too.  I think Novartis makes Tegretol.  I went to their website (http://www.novartis.com/) but couldn't find a patient monograph.

According to http://www.merck.com/mmpe/lexicomp/carbamazepine.html, one of the "Adverse Reactions" is "Hepatic: Abnormal liver function tests, hepatic failure, hepatitis, jaundice".  I'm taking Trileptal, which is also made by Novartis, without any adverse reactions, but I think the risk of elevated liver functions is the same.  There must be something else you can take, though.  Your GI and Neurologist can sort it out for you, I'm sure.

Best of luck to you!

Sam
