Gastritis/Gallbaladder/Anxiety

I am 26 yrs old and in October 2008 I started having an upset stomach almost daily. I went the the dr and have had an endoscopy. It showed that I had "mild acute chronic gastritis" (I think that is what they said). My stomach was not getting better with carafate and nexium so I had a gastric emptying study and then a HIDA scan. The HIDA scan showed my gallbladder was only working 10% and I had it removed in December. I am STILL suffering from nausea!!! I went back to my primary doctor and he said my anxiety is contributing to my upset stomach. (Oh, and I never puke). I have had diareahea some days, constipation some days. Anyway, how long does it take gastritis to heal and do you think that anxiety can really mess with my stomach/digestion that much? I am taking 40mg protonix daily and about half my dose of carafate daily. (Its hard to take the carafate since you have to take it on an empty stomach.)

Wow. Twisted. Going through something similar myself: HIDA scan came back with an EF of 19%. What was your emptying scan result?

Here's the deal: can your anxiety cause gastric issues? Abso-frigg'n-lutely. Basically it's a matter of how your body reacts to certain stimuli. Start with the Vagus nerve. Now, this nerve is the biggest nerve in your body, going from your brain to your jaw, down your esophagus, all the way to your colon. It controls a good portion of how your body works, including how the stomach pumps and how your intestines work. It's also the nerve that gets active whenever you get anxious. This fires off your sympathetic nervous system which also slows down functions not-essential to "fight or flight", like digestion. So while it may not account for 100% of your problems, anxiety will cause a lot of mischief within your system.

Recommendations: First, start taking DGL 20 minutes before meals. This will help soothe the stomach lining. Additionally, Aloe Vera juice will also help. Start drinking chamomile tea to help soothe your nerves. Activities like Yoga, Qi Gong, and T'ai Ch'i will help. (I find that full contact martial arts in general help, because they help get out some of that stress.) Finally, consider getting psychological help for your anxiety. (I DON'T recommend taking psychiatric drugs.) I highly recommend finding someone familiar with the Dabrowski theory of positive disintegration.

Good luck.

Yes, I am VERY stressed out and I have always had anxiety issues, but they really came out when I started having issues with my stomach. The Dr thinks that my anxiety is making my gastritis worse. And I guess I got the gastritis from my gallbladder not working. I am in great shape. I am only 26 I am 5 foot 11 and a size 8. I have noticed that when my stomach starts to hurt my anxiety is real bad. I don't know which one is causing which and it is frustrating!!!
