I was recently Diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus - no dysplasia. Doc stated the area is very small. I am so worried that now my life is doomed....
Can you shed some light
Thanks
A year isn't really a long time for most individuals. Barrett's is considered in most cases to progress very slowly.
Take the meds as prescribed and also consider a GERD-friendly diet. You can find a representative example at www.gicare.com under the diet category. Also consider making lifestyle changes that are recommended for those with GERD.
The meds may take a number of weeks to really 'kick in.' If you don't see much change - with the meds and a change in diet, etc - within several months, call the doc and go back to discuss the issue.
Hello, I also was just diagnosed with Barrett's- no dysplasia. I only started sysmptoms a few months ago, but the doctor told me that I must have had acid reflux for years. He prescribed Omeprazole for the mornings and Pepcid for the evenings, and wants to see me in a year. This sounds like a long time. I am concerned that it may worsen. How will I know if the medication is working?
Thanks for your reply and suggestion. I did get an endoscopy and it's all status quo and he put me back on Nexxium. You're right, it's a good ideal to ask for copies of test results.
Go get and upper endoscopy and check out the status of the Barrett's. In the future, make sure you get a copy of all of your medical records and test results to read. Not being told results happens far too often - and it shouldn't.
