Yes age does have a little to do with it that is why old people hear a lot of jokes about prune juice. Some of the key to keeping you bowels moving
are diet , drink lots of water about 8-10 glasses a day drinking them throughout the day sort of keeping the food that you eat moistened.
Exercise by at least walking for half an hour or so. I am 72 if I do not drink enough water my stools harden as well.My doctor always tell me to eat more
fiber laden foods.Anoher thing when you get the urge to go--go for it right away.

This does seem to become a problem with age but I think you need to drink more water and maybe get on a stool softener to help with passing your stools.  Colace and Miralax are two very good ones and they are sold over-the-counter.  So long as you're not in any pain or seeing any blood, I don't feel this is anything to worry about. The water is very important in many ways.  Hope this helps and take care.
