Severe lower abdominal pain

I was wondering if anyone knows what could be the cause of severe lower abdominal/pelvic area pain. It  is not constant, but rather subsides briefly and returns in the form of very sharp stabbing pains. Assuming it was just gas pains, over-the-counter medication for that has been taken, but to no avail. I don't have a clue what it would be, any possible diagnosis would be great just so I could feel a little better.

I don't know if you are a male or female, but if you are a female it could be a very large ovarian cyst.  They come and go, and can range in size.
