gallbladder removal has increased pain

My wife had her gallbladder removed on Aug 2, 2009.  Her surgeon said it was absolutely routine, everything went as smoothly as he has ever seen.  Since the surgery, she has had a frequent hot stabbing pain under her ribs in her right side.  It seems to be linked to moving or stretching, especially if she laughs or coughs.  She says that it feels like someone stabs her with a hot knife, and afterwards the pain will continue throbbing and twinging for anywhere from 15 minutes to a couple of hours.  Pain meds aren't touching it, and neither is the Neurontin that her surgeon prescribed on the change that it was from damage to a nerve.  According to him, this is a perfectly normal post op result, and he seems to think it will subside.  From our end, it seems to be getting worse.  Any ideas?

After the re-check for escaped gall stones, etc. find a competent, knowledgeable chiropractor to find out if during the surgical procedure a rib or vertebrae was dislocated. That happened to me when I had shoulder surgery and I got no relief until the rib was slipped back into socket - it took a couple of visits to have it stay in place. If you saw how they man-handle you before, during, and after surgery you would understand what I'm talking about. Just a thought!

If your wife had stones or sludge, make sure you ask the doc to recheck to see if any stones or sludge escaped during surgery into the common bile duct. It can happen and it can cause a lot of pain.

The other thing that can happen is spasms of the common bile duct. If that's what's going on narcotic-based pain meds may make things worse. The condition is called SOD - sphincter of Oddi dysfunction - and it would need to be diagnosed and treated by a specialist in that field.

Make sure your wife stays on a low fat diet. Some people have a number of problems digesting fats after GB surgery. A low fat diet can sometimes be of help.
