morning vomiting in teen boy

I am writing on behalf of my son.  He is almost 17 and has had issues with morning nausea and vomiting for several years.  It comes and goes and lasts 3-5 days.  It will wake him up in the morning for several days and he will either vomit (most often only once) or feel nauseous for an hour or so and then is perfectly fine the rest of the day.  When it ends he is fine for several weeks before it starts again.  He is otherwise very healthy and active although quite thin, even on the edge of being underweight.  He normally has a good appetite except during these episodes when he seems to get full very quickly.

I am hoping for some insight on what could be causing this or how to help with it.  I strongly believe it is NOT linked to stress (I have been doing a lot of online research and this has come up often) as he is a very confident person and not at all a worrier.

thanks so much for any help.
Kat

Autonomic Dysfunction - Symptom onset common in puberty. Can be secondary to Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome or Marfans - Connective Tissue disorder which frequently reresults in Gastric Reflux, Gastroparesis, Early Satiety & Joint Hypermobility. Marfans patients exhibit longer than average fingers & toes & are often above average hight. G.P referral to a Rheumatologist is worthwhile.

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome - Postural B.P drop results in compensatory Tachycardia & Pre-Syncope/Syncope and Vasovagal effects

I was just going to mention dysautonomia, POTS and gastroparesis. This is what my niece has and her symptoms are exactly as all the above have stated. A neurologist diagnosis using a tilt table. She has to maintain her salt levels and keep her blood pressure down. She uses a prescription for her nausea.
Thanks guys.  Good stuff there to research.

My 19 year old son has had a vomiting problem for the past 6 months- he was away at college so I wasn't fully aware of it until he started mentioning it to me. Like most of you, it isn't daily or even on a regular basis but the fact that it happens at all is concerning - especially when it isn't due to food poisoning, alcohol or stomach flu. Last night he threw up about a half hour after dinner (and he barely ate) and then played hockey with his brother for about 20 minutes or so. Then he told me it happened last week while he was playing basketball. We had a ton of bloodwork done in May - and even repeated it two weeks later since he had been sick with an unknown virus late April - which after being on an antibiotic he did improve. He cited numerous examples of times when out of nowhere he has thrown up numerous times. Unfortunately, we don't have a lot of time before he has to go back to school but in two weeks we have an appointment with a GI dr. who I also see and like a lot. I am hoping for some diagnosis so that he can feel better. He is 5'9, 135 pounds and can't afford to lose any more weight. He went to college at this weight and said he put on a few pounds but lost it all from vomiting. SO frustrating. I am so glad I found this "community" and hope we can all help our children to get this problem under control if not resolved.

Hi kdgirl89...3 years later, have things improved?  I have a 19-yr-old going through the same thing.
Going through this now....did anything ever get resolved?

I am interested to find out if the kombucha helped? My 16 y/o son has coming and going of the morning nausea and will occasionally vomit.  He does have to take an acid reducer with his allergy pill before most sports, he tends to break out in hives when he sweats or is around cottonwood trees.  I find it interesting that it seems the common thing in all or most of the posts is an active sporty teen is having the issues...maybe a link there.  Thanks

My son has a very similar problem to the ones you all mentioned here . He's 15 and is very tall for his age but fairly underweight ( his arms are as thin as my wrist ) it started about last month . One day , he came home from school feeling so nauseous he couldn't eat dinner . About an hour after he went to bed he got up and was vomiting for a good fifteen minutes and felt weak and nauseous afterwords . I kept him home from school that day in hopes of him getting better . I gave him ginger tea , mint tea , ginger ale and lemon juice , but non of them worked . After about two to three days he would be fen and then the whole thing would start over again about four weeks later .
I just sent him to bed with a little tea in his stomach because he was sick today again , but I'm really worried . He's already very thin and is losing more weight . HELP
