3 years later and still scared

Hello i am a 28 year old african american man living in the united states who is a heterosexual, non drug user who in May 2005 had unprotected vaginal sex with a female I met two weeks prior only once. It was a one time exposure and i am still scared about it. In the past three years i have never been sick once (not even a cold). no night sweats, rashes,  and no weight loss. I actually gained 15 pounds since the exposure. 3 weeks ago a  white spot appeared on my tongue which i believe to be oral thrush looking at pictures on the internet. it lasted 4 days.  yesterday the white spot appeared again. I know that is a symptom of hiv. it has me going crazy all over again.

1. Is oral thrush the first symptom of HIV three years later.
2. How hard is it for man to catch hiv only having unprotected sex once.

I doubt you have oral thrush, which doesn't cause just one or two white spots in the mouth. Many other things are more likely causes.  Second, even if you have thrush, most people with oral thrush don't have HIV. (I once had an oral yeast infection mysef.)  Third, it is almost impossible you have HIV, if your sexual history is accurate.

The biggest puzzle in this question is why you are asking about it on this or any other forum -- and why you have let yourself be worried about such a low risk exposure for 3 years without checking it out before now.  See a health care provider to both assess your oral condition and have an HIV test.  I will be happy to take a follow-up question or comment if you return to report the results, but not until then.

In the meantime, try to relax.  Almost certainly you don't have HIV.

Best wishes--   HHH, MD

No.

And what exactly did you think it meant when I wrote "I will be happy to take a follow-up question or comment if you return to report the results, but not until then"?

Any more and I will delete the entire thread without further response.

Can you explain Oral Hairy Leukoplakia. Is it possible for me to get that without having no other symptoms.
