DUO-Test

l79
Hello Doctor

I have a question regarding the HIV test. (HIV1 / 2 and p24 antigen AB)

Following situation for a test 5 weeks after the contact:

No longer detectable P24 antigen (too low or off)
and  yet formed enough antibodies to detect (low or no since)

Is this Situation, with today's sensitive tests, possible at all, neither p24 nor that the test detects antibodies (after 5 weeks)? (With your experience)

If a negative test after 5 weeks safely and permanently?

thank you very much
Best regards

All I can say is I disagree with your doctor (or you misunderstood him).

There has never been someone with a negative duo test 4 weeks or more after expoure who turned out to have HIV after all.  You are not going to be the first.  Your result is 100% reliable -- and that is what I would say if you were my patient in the clinic. You can safely have unprotected sex with your wife, which is what I would do in your situation.

Don't overthink it.  Accept the standard test interpretation and advice and move on.

That's all I will have to say about it, and so will end this thread.

Welcome to the forum.

You outline a false scenario.  It is not possible for p24 antigen to clear up but antibody to be absent.  It is the antibody that makes the p24 undectable.  Therefore, a negative duo test any time 4 weeks or more after the last exposure is 100% reliable, and your negative result at 5 weeks proves you were not infected.

Here is a thread that explains it in more detail.  Read it all; the main information about the duo test is in a follow-up comment:  http://www.medhelp.org/posts/HIV-Prevention/Need-your-help/show/1345664

I hope this helps.  Best wishes--  HHH, MD

Hello Doctor
Thank you for your professional advice. I have read all the threads that you give me.
But I am still uncertain and restless. I'm very afraid.

My doctor told me, that this was possible. P24 fall down (below detection limit) and AB does not exist (or only under detection limit). For this reason, I should make one last test at 12 weeks. I have to get through this difficult time. My doctor is a general doctor and not an expert in HIV like you. He probably holds only our guidelines. About these differences, I've read enough in their older threads. This problem is clearly for me.

At the end, last questions:

If I understand correctly their statements, would you consider, as an HIV expert, my negative result as definitive, sure to be 100%. Regardless of the risk.

If they were my doctor, would you say to me, that I need no further tests? If I could have infected five weeks before the test, it would indicate the HIV-1 / 2 AB and p24 AG Test for safe? Are you sure?
Sorry for the "are you sure" questions but I'm really very scared.

You know cases who the test-result has changed after 5 weeks?
Can I have again unprotected sex with my wife?

These are my last questions and then I will try to conclude with the situation.

Thank you for your efforts.
Best regards
