SoScared

Dear Dr H
This happened about 2yrs ago..Wasn't thinking at all and was influenced by a bad buddy, we went to a strip joint and brought back the strippers to our hotel room they were from St Catharines, Ontario... I was extremely intoxicated and rubbed my penis on the opening of her vagina maybe 5secs tops...then I slipped and maybe went inside of her unprotected for 2secs tops(if i even did enter here, too drunk) before I smarted up and put a condom on... had protected sex for a few min then I went to the washroom and scrubbed my penis.. later on I asked her if she was clean of stds and she said she was test 6months ago and was clean .. 1)What are my chances of contracting HIV from her? I am worried sick. Thanks  a million everyone. I knew I screwed up bad and has made me more aware of life, since then I have really smartened up in life and no longer go to the bars.
say she did have HIV ...2)what would my chance of getting it from here with that brief encounter...
This happened 2yrs ago and just started worrying about it now seeing how I just started having night sweats and googled why I would be having night sweats and HIV came up...3) I also quit smoking a few weeks ago and just quit coffee a few days ago.and also have been laid off my gym for a few weeks now and have alittle stress about it. could these things give me night sweats? I am worried sick here... Thanks Doc for your help you give to me and others... This whole ordeal has changed my life.. Thanks and god bless.... Also I did go in for a std test and hep c and they call came back neg 6months after the incident, though I never got a HIV test done due to that fact of being so scared it would be positive.

Welcome to our Forum.  I see that you have also posted on the International HIV Forum as well.  I suspect you will get similar answers from both of us.  Let's deal first with your risk of HIV, then your night sweats and finally your fear of testing.

1. Your risk of HIV is tiny.  The reasons I say this are that it is unlikely that your partner had HIV,  She said she did not and most people tell the truth.  Even if she did have HIV, and if you penetrated her during your encounter, your risk for getting HIV from a single unprotected episode is about 1 in 1000 and in your case, given the brevity of your encounter, probably lower than that. Thus, the odds of you having gotten HIV from this exposure are very, very low.

2.  Your symptoms.  Night sweats are a totally non-specific symptom which could be due to infection, to heart burn (reflux), anxiety or any of a number of causes.  To worry about HIV from symptoms is a waste of time.

3.  Your fear of testing.  get over your fear of HIV testing.  Testing does not give a person HIV but it does give them the power to know what is going on and whether or not they have the infection.  Most tests are negative and if you were so unfortunate as to have HIV, the test would allow you to seek treatment sooner.  There is no reason to delay or avoid HIV testing.

I hope these comments are helpful to you.  It is most unlikely that you have HIV.  Go on and get tested so you can put this concern behind you.  EWH
