Hi heres my situation im a female and last year my boyfriend cheated on me with a black jamaican prostitute in jamaica after 5 weeks he got really sick with high fever swollen gland in the neck he felt like he had mono lasted 2 days anyways after 10 weeks past the exposure he tested negative to hiv so the doctor told him no need for retesting your hiv neg so we started to have sex again and after about 5 months i got pregnant so we were happy BUT after 4 weeks of our last exposure at the begining of my pregnancy  a got sick runny nose body aches and trouble breathing but no fever so the doctor told me i have a pneumonia .I didnt think of hiv by that time and after 9 weeks past our last exposure i got a routine hiv test for pregnant woman and it was negative but during that time i started having i big rash on my back, neck and chest lasted for about 2 months and at 31 weeks into the pregnancy i had to get a abortion cause my baby had a Congenital diaphragmatic hernia so the doctors told us almost no chance of survival so my question are 1.does a hiv test at 9 weeks on a pregnant women is conclusive. 2 does having hiv can cause Congenital diaphragmatic hernia  to a baby 3.is the rash was due to hiv please doctor help me cause im very sad after loosing my baby

I saw this before resonding above.  His risk, and your risk, are not really relevant.  The test results tell the truth.  Neither of you has HIV.

Welcome to the HIV forum.  I understand your concerns.  But you can relax.  It is clear your boyfriend didn't catch HIV and you don't have it.

Your partner had a pretty high risk exposure, since HIV rates are higher among Caribbean natives than in industrialized countries.  And mononucleosis and acute HIV infection are very similar illnesses; undoubtedly he and his doctor were worried it might have been HIV.  However, the HIV tests are extremely accurate.  Regardless of his exposure and the nature of his illness, if he had caught HIV, his 10 week test definitely would be positive.

And for that reason, it is impossible you caught HIV from him.  If you haven't had sex with anyone else recently, you are not at risk.  Something else was the cause of your symptoms; it sounds like a garden variety respiratory virus.  Many common viral infections cause rash.

To your specific questions:

1) Your test result is conclusive, pregnant or not.  Pregnancy does not affect HIV testing.

2) HIV doesn't cause diaphragmatic hernia or any other congenital abnomrality.

3) Your test result proves that something besides HIV is causing your rash.

Continue to work with your doctor or clinic about the cause of your rash or any other symptoms.  But you can stop worrying about HIV.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
