HIV test indeterminate

Hello,

I recently have been very sick, and after having an endoscopy, the dr found that I have esophageal candida and an esophageal ulcer. The week before that, I was treated for an URI and the dr put me on antibiotics, a "z-pack". After finding the candida, the dr came in frantic and ordered that I have an HIV test because he had never seen this in anyone but aids patients. I was tested for HIV back in August, and the result was negative. I did have the test done, and in the mean time went to the drug store and took a home test- results were negative. When I went back to the dr, he told me I was HIV positive and I had to see an INfectious disease specialist. Looking over the results I see that they are actually indeterminate, and my uncle who is a retired hematologist said that it is not right and could be many other things. I'm not sure if he is being honest or just trying to make it easier on me.

I am 20 years old, have been with a few girls, and my current girl friend (who I've been sleeping with for 6 months) told me that after a month or so into our relationship, she took a trip to Spain and had unprotected sex with a guy she met. She too took a rapid test which also came back negative.

My results:
HIV Abs index: 45.74- high - repeatedly reactive abnormal
Gp160 AB- absent
Gp 120 AB- absent
P65- absent
P55 AB- absent
P51 AB- equivocal
Gp 41 AB- absent
Gp40 AB - present - abnormal
P31 AB- absent
P24 AB- present- abnormal
P18 AB- absent

Cytomegalovirus Ab IgG- 8.5
Herpes simplex I/II IgG- 29.3
CytomegaloviruS Ab IgM- 1.0

Do you think this is a false positive or false hope.  Thank you for your time!

A CD4 cell count of less than 200 is AIDS territory

He prescribed diflucan and carafate to take care of the thrush. And if it is not caused by the thrush can you think of any other reasons why the index value would be so incredibly high?

The thrush? No and if that is what you had you wouldn't have received an inderteminate result. It would have been positive. So what meds did he give your for the thrush.

That would affect the results like that?

The answer is you need to retest and ID doctor should have advised you when he saw the index value was incorrect let alone the indeterminate results. Esophageal candida  is found in patients that are HIV positive with a CD4 level less than 200. Had you had esophageal thrush you would not have received a result as such.
