Helping someone who cut his finger...

This Q is not of a sexual nature. Just today, a guy from my company had cut his finger deeply and asked me to help him. I took out some gauze and used it to apply pressure to the wound with my index finger and thumb. So it was my index finger on top, then the gauze, then his cut finger, and then my thumb, if you saw it from top to bottom. His finger was bleeding profusely. Some blood may have soaked thru the gauze and come into contact with my finger, but I am not sure.

After I had sorted him out, i looked at my index finger and noticed some peeled cuticles around the nail. They did not appear to be bleeding. I did not see any cuts.

Am I at risk from this incident of contracting HIV, assuming he is infected?

Thank you.

Thanks Vance. But if 2 people had deep cuts and thier finger wounds touched each other...both bleeding...not possible for transmission?

No it would not be. 1st the minimal amount of blood that could have made contact would not have been enough for a risk. 2nd the cut would be superficial and give no path to the blood stream.

If you have a risk from a cut you would not worry about someone else you would be worried about yourself because you would have had to cut a vein or artery.

Thanks Teak. Hypothetically, if I did have a bleeding wound on my finger, and this guy was HIV positive, and his blood contacted my bleeding finger wound, could this be a route of transmission for HIV? Could blood to blood contact thru cuts on a finger lead to a transmission? Could you explain a little? Thank again.
