I am worried

Hello Doctor, I have had protected sex with prostitute..(Stupid me). Now I am really worried. I have tested for HIV test. My elisa test is postive and western blot is negative.I was tested 7 months after that sex episode. I have developed so much anxiety that i keep getting tested. My elisa keeps on coming positive and western blot is negative. last test was done after 1 year. 1. do you think I have tested too late that western blot is not able to detect antibodies.? I know that elisa test has some false positive results....2. If its not hiv antibodies than what could it be? ever since i heard that elisa test is positive I just cant concentrate on any thing and my body gets hot at night..temp (99.1). I even feel cold in summer 3. do you think I have developed severe anxiety? I have had viral load test done and they are all negative but sometime viral load test are negative in HIV positive people...My cd4 count is 741 or something like that but cd 8 is in 800 and the ratio is just below 1. Please respond quickly.....and thanks for your answer....

Welcome to our Forum. I will try to help.  The results of your test indicate that you do not have HIV but have the misfortune of having what is called a "false positive" test for HIV.  False positive tests, that is positive tests on blood tests in people who actually do not have the infection being tested for occur in ALL blood tests for infectious diseases.  For this reason, the typical strategy for antibody (blood) testing for infectious diseases is to usually do not one but two unrelated tests for the infection.  If both tests are positive the infection is almost certainly present while if only one test (in your case, the ELISA) is positive but the other is not, then the test is falsely positive.  False positive tests can be transient and due to other, un-related infections or allergies or can be a longstanding, otherwise unexplainable characteristic of a person and the antibodies they make.

You may wish t discuss this further with your doctor.  Another way of proving that this is a false positive test would be to have A PCR test for HIV RNA performed.  I suspect this too would be negative, thereby providing further proof that your test is falsely positive, not an unusual manifestation of infection.

I hope this comment is helpful to you.  EWH

Repeating the question does not get it answered any more quickly.  I get to them as I can.

Anxiety does not cause fever however fever is a non-specific finding and does not mean that a person has HIV.  In your case, the temperatures you report would not be considered significant by many health care providers.

No, a western blot does not become negative.   Once infected it will stay positve throughout the course of infection.  EWH
