Need Urgent Advice

Dear Dr. I recently had a finger inserted in my rectum (fingernails were slightly long) by an escort (sex worker). This lasted for about 30 seconds, she also started to insert a vibrator into my anus, and within 10-20 seconds I asked her to cover it with a condom, which she did but also assured me she washed it with bleach and hot water prior to arriving (but cant be sure about that). I had completely protected oral sex only and am also sure the vibrator came in contact with her vagina. As a precauation I started taking Doxycycline to handle all the bacterial std's, just in case. I am in a relationship and very, very worried. Do I need to abstain from sex until 6 weeks for results, or live normally. Am I at risk of aquiring herpes or hiv from the toy or finger. Please help ASAP. Thanks very much

No need for another reply doctor, just wanted to mention the fact that I have prostatitis; so many symptoms are so similar that it creates a lot of anxiety and confusion.

Thanks very much. I am a 43 yr old man, I thought I was mature enough not to get in this terrible predicament.  I will take your advice and not think about this again, and continue relations with my spouse. Lastly I  do not need to get any future Herpes or HIV testing at all correct. Thanks again DR H.

Welcome to the HIV forum.

HIV is transmitted by insertive intercourse, meaning a penis inside a partner's vagina, rectum or mouth.  Fingering is not a risk.  Even if theoretically one might suspect it to happen once in a while, for example if there were a bleeding wound on the inserted finger, it has never been reported or even suspected to occur.  You aren't likely to be the world's first case.  Anyway, the chance any particular female in the US or other industrialized country, even if she is a commercial sex worker, is very low, probably less than 1 chance in 1,000.

Taking doxycycline was a mistake, since it will prevent evaluation of bacterial STDs.  But probably no harm done; as for HIV, no bacterial STD can be transmitted by fingering and probably not by vibrators or other sex toys.  And the doxy would indeed abort syphilis, gonorrhea or chlamydia had you been exposed.

There is absolutely no reason you cannot safely continue unrpotected sex with your wife.  Certainly I would do so if I were in your situation.

It sounds like you have some rather serious emotional issues connected with your decision to have this sexual experience, and you'll have to deal with that.  But there is no chance you have an STD or HIV from these events.
