HIV risk

Hey Doc,

I had a scare yesterday. I had unprotected oral sex and protected vaginal and anal with a sex worker.  The condom was fully intact during vaginal and anal intercourse. I pulled out and the condom was still intact but when we changed positions and I was about insert again in the anus I pulled on the condom and it popped. I heard it and seen it and she heard it . I was not in her when it happen thankfully, but I did not go back in unprotected. can a condom fail before it breaks? I ask her did she have anything and she said no and that she gets tested every 3 months. Please advise

Thanks Doc,

For the timely response. This is the last question i promise. What is the likelyhood that I got gential herpes for the oral sex. Do I need to go get tested for it. I notice I have a rash on my penis which it could be from the condom irritation or rough sex. I have had it before. It doesn't look like herpes

Please advise.

Nope, no risk from oral sex.  The quoted figure for HIV risk, if one has oral sex with an infected partner is less than 1 in 10,000 and, in my estimation that is too high. Some experts state there is no risk at all from oral sex.  Neither of us on this site have ever seen or reading the medical literature of a convincing instance in which HIV was passed by oral sex.

Same answer for touching her anus at the time of conom breakage.  No risk.  EWH

THANKS DOC
so i am not at risk for hiv from the unprotected oral sex? If I had std there is usual discharge for chlamydia or gonarhea. What if the tip of my penis touch her anus when the condom broke. I don't think it did just asking

Good question.  You can be confident that when the condom failed, that was the instance that it became unreliable.  A condom would not leak before it went on to break.  Since you did not re-enter your partner without the protection of a condom, there is no risk to you for HIV.

Hope this comment is helpful. EWH
