Dr. Hook,
I really need your help and know that I'm pushing the envelope on this. I hope you'll indulge me, but I'm trying to get as much clarity as possible. The answer you shared on the hypothetical scenario that I described in my first posting on 3/19/14 said this:
"I hope these comments are helpful. Personally, I would not recommend sharing nose hair clippers on a hygienic basis but not because I would worry about risk for HIV." EWH
May I assume your response means that I should not be concerned about HIV transmission in the manner described in my first posting and there would be no medical need for HIV testing despite the theoretical risk?
Thank you Dr. Hook for your patience and kind responses. Have a good evening.
No risk.
This will end this thread. Further repetitive, anxiety-driven questions will be deleted without comment. EWH
I'm sorry Dr. Hook but just wanted to be sure that you also understood that I am not certain how much time had passed since the device had been used prior to my using it either. Still no risk?
The type of alcohol makes no impact on my assessment. Still no risk.
You can continue to use the clippers given to you.
I addressed your hypothetical scenario in my original reply. I will not repeat it.
This thread needs to end now. Take care. EWH
Thank you Dr. Hook...Sorry...please ignore the previous comment and respond only to this one...
The alcohol that was used was the "rubbing" alcohol type and I am not certain how much time had passed since the device had been used prior to my using it. Would this change your recommendation for no HIV testing?
I have the clippers that were given to me by the family friend and understand that I may continue to use them as long as no one else does or should I buy new ones?
The hypothetical scenario that I described in my first posting would not have warranted HIV testing either?
Thank you Dr. Hook... Just for clarification:
The alcohol that was used was the "rubbing" alcohol type. Would this change your recommendation?
I have the used clippers and understand that I may continue to use them as long as no one else does or should I buy new ones?
The hypothetical scenario that I described in my first posting would not have warranted HIV testing either?
You did not need to ask this as a new question. It could have been asked as follow-up to your earlier question.
The risk for HIV from the event you describe is virtually zero. You do know that the person who used it before you had HIV and HIV would have been non-infectious after the alcohol and passage of time between the previous use and your use. I suggest you get your own clipper however.
Regardng your questions:
Additional Question #1 So, based on the circumstances described that actually occurred, would you recommend testing for HIV for medical reasons?
I see no need for HIV testing.
Additional Question #2 May I continue to use the nose hair clipper/trimmer going forward as long as I am the only person using it?
Yes.
