Hello,
I have read your web page and have found the information on your site very useful.
I am hoping that you would be able to answer some question about my HRE that happened all most 8 and a half weeks ago any advice would be greatly aprieated. 8 and half weeks ago I had sex with an East African sex worker on dubai. I can remember putting on a condom but because I was extremely intoxicated I cannot remember if it stayed on hence all the anxiety I have been having. I think it did slip off though I have some memory of this occurring.
Time line of events
3 days after dry mouth and red spots that kept changing areas daily the doctor told me it was geographic tongue

2 weeks had a sore throat and dry cough. Most people at my work had a cold with a sore throat.

4 weeks later had a HIV test I think it was only a gen 3 test though as it had no P24 test with it all NEG

5 weeks later had a gen 4 ECLIA HIV 1 & 2 + P24 test done all NEG. I also had a proviral DNA PCR HIV test NEG as well.

6 weeks gen 4 HIV TEST ALL NEG

7 weeks swollen lympnode glands in groin, sore throat again and sores in lip of mouth and lump on inside of right check.

8 weeks gen 4 HIV 1 & 2 + P24 AN (serum) test NEG
My question are
1. What was my risk of catching HIV?
2. These test where done in Dubai they told me that they where 4 generation tests do you think test done in Dubai would be as good as those in the western world?
3. Do you think any of my symptoms have to do with ARS?
Thanks for the advice I am currently deployed and the military doctor said I have to test out to 6 months which I think is out dated from most sites I have read on the internet I have been getting the test done at an STD clinic in Dubai. So you expert advice will be greatly received.

Welcome to the Forum.  From the information you have provided, you can be confident that you did not get HIV.  Believe your tests.  More details below.

1. What was my risk of catching HIV?
Low. The rate of HIV among commercial sex workers in Dubai is low. further, even if your partner had HIV, you used a condom.  Had you not used a condom, your risk for infection would have been about 1 infection per 1000 acts of intercourse.  With a condom, your risk is closer to 1 in a million.

2. These test where done in Dubai they told me that they where 4 generation tests do you think test done in Dubai would be as good as those in the western world?
Yes, the tests you mention are quite good. Globally, HIV tests are comparable form country to country with few exceptions.  Dubai is not one of the exceptions.  Your results, as reported above, definitively rule out the possibility of HIV.

3. Do you think any of my symptoms have to do with ARS?
No.  Your symptoms are non-specific and coincidental. There is no need to worry that they might be HIV- your test results rule this possibility out.

I hope these comments are helpful. Take care. EWH

Thank you again. That’s four weeks of less stress and anxiety best $20 dollars I have ever spent.
Cheers Doc and trust me I will never be in this boat again.
