hiv panic

Hi Dr.
I had an accident on June 18th 2008.  The condom broke and he ejaculated in me.  I have been really stressed out these past weeks and cant stop thinking about HIV.  I heard rumors after the incident that he might've messed with someone who might have HIV.  Like I said these are rumors.  I asked him if he was HIV+ he said no, but u know many people are not gonna be truthful.  I havent had any fever but i do have a rash it itches sometimes, it looks flat and thats it,they are not red, maybe a bit lighter than my skin color sometimes they're gone but when i think about this issue i see them again.  All day I'm checking to see if I see anymore rash.  I took an HIV test on Friday the July 18th.  It came out negative.  I want to know did i take the test too early and what does the reash associated with ARS look like? Also do I have to have all the symptoms of ARS and would the test came out positive being that I may have symptoms?

Your test will be negative.  At that time, as now, it will be time to put theseconcerns behind you and move forward with your life.  EWH

You have little to worry about.   You tested at a good time when 85-90% of persons who had been infected will have positive tests.  Thus, if you had gotten HIV, chances are that your test would be positive by now.  The chances that you got HV however are very low even before you got tested. Here’s why:

1.  Most people do not have HIV and most people do tell the truth.
2.  If he had HIV, the chance of a single exposure infecting you is less than 1 in 1000.

The Ora Quick is a fine test.

Finally, forget about the rash - it is not ARS.  It is too long after your exposure to be ARS and there are other symptoms associated with it.  My advice, take a deep breath, stop obsessively examining yourself and appreciate that you are more likely to be hit by lightening this afternoon than to have HIV.  Repeat your test in a month or so to be 100% sure you do not have it if you wish but my confident advice is not to worry.  EWH

Ok well i just went back to the doctor today and finally got the results from the test i took on August 1, 2008.  It came back negative.  I hope thats a good sign. I'm still worried, but not as much.  That test was 6 weeks after exposure.  On the 18th of this month would make it 3 months.  I will take a rapid test on Friday to make sure.  The thing that makes me upset is that I asked the doctor when is it conclusive she said within a year and thats just too long for me to worry.  Friday i will find out for sure and finally put this behind me.

At 6 weeks 95% of tests that are going to be positive will be, at 8 weeks that increases to 98-99% and at 12 weeks >99%.  You have to decide when the proportion of tests that will have become positive will be sufficient to reduce your misplaced anxiety.  I told you you did not need to worry when you initally asked your question.  Further questions will be deleted.  EWH

yesterday i woke up to my throat hurting when i swallow and my ears hurt a bit. this would be 44 days since possible exposure.  Also had a high fever and my glands hurt..can this be ARS?  Is it too late for symptoms.  I took a blood test today that should be here in two weeks or so...I am so afraid...do I still gotta wait three months?

I also remember around the second week I had some tingling on my face and when i touched the area I had a flat red bump on my face.  It looked like a flat pimple or something of the sort.  It went away after 3-4 days. And then again this week I had another on my face it was red and kinda flat, like if I had an allergic reaction, I put some benadryll and it went down. I am so scared and I am still itching like crazy for the past week. I 'm just scared of the possibility of it being positive when i take it again in 4 weeks....

No, your description of the timing of symptoms, as well as the nature of your symptoms do not suggest ARS - really.  Please don't worry, when you take your  test it will be negative.  EWH

But doesn't the ARS symptoms occur druing 2 to 4 weeks after infection and doesn't it vary from person to person being that eveyone's immune system is different?  I will take the test 4 weeks from now to be sure but I must say I am worried so much.  I couldn't sleep last night, when I layed down I was shaking like I was a scared little kid and I cry all the time of the thought of having HIV.  Can stress make me breakout with thisd rash?
