acute HIv symptoms and risk factor; sigmoidscope

Dear Dr.
I Last year, I was really ill with a parasite E. Histolytica, which most doctors could not diagnose through stool tests. Then I went to a world famous doctor in NY who does a sigmoidscope. It is not a typical colonoscopy. They said they sterilized the quipment. It is a tube kind of thing he inserts into your anus. During the previous visits, I was fine.

Within two days after the 3rd visit, I became deadly ill. with fatigue; I mean horribly fatigued. I became kind of dizzy, and fatigued. Next day i had horrible diarrhea, continuing for 10 days. My fatigued increased. I thought I had caught another parasite. But there really was no other exposure to bad food. But I knew that this time I got something. Because I developed new symptoms: STIFF NECK and shoulder muscle pain. To-date I have this. I also have bowel problems. Have flue like symptoms…; did several blood tests, no HIV tests, and they said ok. A two weeks ago, they said I have high white blood cell cound, 46. Could I have gotten HIV or Hepatic C from this? Why stiff neck and shoulder pain… not just musle pain.

No drugs have any effect on HIV tesing.  But I repeat there is no point in HIV testing.  There is no chance you caught HIV from the sigmoidoscopy.  I would advise you to not do any testing of any kind without the guidance of a personal physician.

Dr. One last question of testing;
I want to do a HIV test. But now I am taking Tinidazole and paromomycin...

would those drugs affect the test? Should i wait after the drugs?
thanks so much?

These symptoms also are not suggestive of HIV.  This information doesn't change my opinion or advice.  However, shoulder pain could reflect the kind of infection that might result from colonic perforation or other complication of the sigmoidoscopy.   You should immediately -- don't wait until Monday -- contact that doctor (if you haven't already done so) and make sure s/he is aware of what is going on.  Feel free to let me know what s/he says about it, but until then I won't have any further comments or advice.

Dear Doctor, thanks for the quick reply.

my white blood cell count was "46" it said normal range was 26-40.

just 46.

No I never had fever has such.

But How can I get a stiff neck, which is not going away.  Also, it was not a colonosopy.... it is a tube just he sticks into the anus, and it takes a mucus sample from the colon tissue, and it takes minutes.

I am worried that this tube may have been contaminated... or it had some virus? My neck pain and shoulder muscle pain, which runs down the arm does not go away. and my stomach has not been the same since then.

thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

You can be sure you caught no infection from the sigmoidoscopy.  Most likely your illness is just a coincidence in timing.  However, there could be a very small chance that the procedure caused a complication, like a perforation in your lower colon.  That might explain some of your symptoms, although not others (and if that had occurred, I would have expected the first symptom to be severe low abdominal pain starting within a few hours of the procedures).  Still, to be maximally safe you need to discuss this illness with the doctor who did the procedure.

Clarify your white blood cell count.  4,600 would be normal, but 46,000 would be very high.

The specific symptoms you describe (flu-like symptoms, fever, fatigue, elevated [or normal] WBC, stiff neck, shoulder pain) are entirely nonspecific; they can occur with virtually any infection.  But there is absolutely no reason to be concerned about HIV, hepatitis B or C, or any other blood-borne infection -- and almost certainly this is unrelated to the sigmoidoscopy.  Continue to work with your doctor(s) to figure out what's going on.

Regards--  HHH, MD

Dr. I also developed nausea, heaaches, and other symptoms; of course my system was badly damaged from this from being for a year last year; but this stiff neck, and shoulder pain, which makes feel I always have a flue is what I never ever had. In my entire life. This is why I worry this is HIV.

I have no sexual exposure; I have not had sex for years with anyone...

thanks so much
