could cranker sores on the mouth be signs of ARS or HIV infection

Hi Doc,
I wrote in a week or two ago with regards to an incident that happened post 29days ago, it was posted on the STD site.I was then concerned of the possibilites of contracting herpes, which fortunately turned out to be a false alarm. Now am concerned of contracting something more sinister like prehaps HIV. Reason for the concern, recently I developed an ulcer near the gums but on my cheek, it caused the infected area to be swollen, went to see a doc two days ago to get it check out as well as to do a rapid HIV antibodies test( this was post 26 days) the result was negative. Doc claims that the ulcer is known as stress ulcers, place me on a few days of mild antibotics. The ulcer was subsiding but this morning I found another ulcer on my lip that seems to be growing. What could be the problem? Is this a sign of primary HIV infection. How much confidence can i take from my recent negative result

Of course no surprise your test result was negative.  So will any additional testing that you do.  There is no need to post any further negative results, so that will end this thread.  Take care.

What is it about my recent comments you don't get????

If you post one more follow-up comment other than your test result, this entire thread will be immediately deleted.

hi doc, As you know, I will be looking to do my antibodies test on the 42 day mark. I am currently now on a course of Tamiflu aka Oseltamivir. My question would it cause my test result to be invalid. Thanks this would be my last question.

Again:  "feel free to post the result, but let's hold off on further discussion until then."

Hi Doc,
Thank you for the assurance. I pray that you are correct.. Am starting to develope a fever now, perhaps it is the flu virus running its course. I do not think it changes your evaluation right... If ars were to occur all the symptoms normally develop upon onset rite??Fever , rash and all...

As I said above, test results always overrule symptoms.  And you are correct that it's too late for ARS symptoms, which start 10-20 days after exposure, and your symptoms don't sound like HIV, which generally does not cause nasal congestion or coughing, and almost always causes fever.

Natural ("lambskin") condoms may be less effective in preventing HIV, in theory, than those made from latex or polyurethane.  However, any barrier is better than none and probably natural condoms are almost as effective.  Latex is by far the most common kind, but it's up to users to know what they are buying; I have no way of knowing what kind you used.

Even without any addtional testing, you can be very certain you don't have HIV.  The new test results will be negative.  But let's not speculate about it further; feel free to post the result, but let's hold off on further discussion until then.

Hi Doc,
Sorry for disturbing you.As you know i did the rapid antibody test on the 26 day post possible exposure(neg-). I am now awaiting for the 6 weeks mark to reconfirm my result but will also do so on the 8 weeks mark for the definitive conclusion. However this morning on the 34 day mark I developed a sore throat, nasal feeling which leads to coughing fits, nothing too serious I think , no fever or much bodyache. My question though I know it may be silly but is this ARS?? Do ARS come about this late post possible exposure??, lastly I was informed that lambskin condoms are not effective against HIV, are commercial used condoms latex?? or lambskin.. Pls help to elate my fears as I wait to get tested once more. Thanks

Patience, patience.  The moderators are not at our computers 24/7!

The additional information does not change my opinion or advice.  Canker sores do not occur as the only symptom of a new HIV infection.  You also had concom-protected sex with someone who, statistically, is very unlikely to have HIV.

It is theoretically possible you were tested too soon; it can take 6-8 weeks for the antibody tests to become positive.  But over 90% of the time, a 4 week test would be positive.  Considering all factors, there is simply no realistic possibility you have HIV.  But if you do not find this reassurance completely settles your fears, feel free to have another HIV test in a few weeks.  It will also be negative.

Hi doc, my expose was 29 days ago..Scenario was like this " I had a brief protected encounter with a masseur, I had brief intercourse with her for a minute or two before giving up as I thought it might be risky though it was protected. The condom was small, I had managed to pull it down till mid way down the shaft of my penis, the head was fully covered( I made sure by holding on the the base of the condom). After giving up, i wanked myself, and left."

So about 22 days post my situation i developed an ulcer , went to see a doctor who said it was nothing to be concern of... 26days later went to the same doctor to do a HIV rapid test (neg-). So my question would be how confident should i be of this result??

Canker sores, by themselves, do not suggest a new HIV infeciton.  Equally importnat, HIV test results always overrule symptoms.  And when someone has symptoms due to HIV, the antibody test is always positive within a few days.  Your negative results 26 days after onset of the oral sores --- and some longer time after your last possible exposure to HIV, whenever that was -- is 100% proof you don't have it.

As for "what could be the problem?", I cannot say; on this forum we don't speculate about non-HIV causes of symptoms.  Canker sores and other sores in the mouth are very common, and the vast majority of the time do not indicate anything serious.

So you can forget HIV as a cause of your canker sores.  If they continue or you remain concerned, see your doctor about it.
