HIV Testing

I made a horrible mistake and had unprotected sex with a male on May 28th where I was the inserter. I did not think much of it until two weeks after the encounter when I started thinking about STD's/HIV. I had a panic attack and rushed to my local clinic on June 11th (2 weeks after encounter) and did a Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test and came up negative. I then went to my doctor on June 13th and did a STD panel test, all which came up negative, including a HIV-1+2 AB EIA test. However, at five weeks (36 days) I was having pains during urination and went back to my doctor and got retested for STD's. It turns out the man who I had sex with wasn't "clean" and I was silly to believe his word to begin with. I unfortunately contracted chlamydia. My doctor also gave me an HIV-1 RNA PCR test on that day which came up with a result of "not detectable." I was still scared and took another Rapid HIV-1/2 Antibody Test on July 11th (6 weeks after encounter) and it came up negative. I noticed a bump on my penis and was concerned about herpes. I went back to my doctor on July 15th (almost 7 weeks after the encounter) and came up negative for everything, including the HIV-1+2 AB EIA test. How conclusive are my results? I know the PCR test is highly sensitive and my doctor tells me that is a very good indication of my status. Thank you!

The only conclusive negative test is one done at 3 months post exposure. There are no tests marketed or sold to give a conclusive negative test result earlier than 3 months post exposure.

Congratulations for your negative results. You can confirm with a simple hiv antibody test at 3 months just for the peace of your mind.

Till then keep calm :)

I plan to but my doctor told me to come back in 6 months to get tested again to confirm. Also, what exactly does the HIV-1 RNA PCR test for? He told me it was more sensitive than an AB EIA test.

3 months post exposure is when you can obtain a conclusive negative test result.
