question for nursegirl please

I would like some advice please for my son. He has had an event happen to him which he is very worried about, again I have told him he was not at risk for HIV.

He got a paper cut from a sheet of paper and he said the sheet of paper had red marks on it, he said the red marks looked like blood. He said that the sheet of paper belonged to a man who injects drugs of some kind but he doesn’t know his HIV status or of the HIV status of anyone else who handled that sheet of paper during the day. He said the man put the sheet of paper down on a table and he picked up that same sheet of paper about 2 seconds after this particular man had put it down and that’s when he got the paper cut. He doesn’t know if this man actually cut himself on the piece of paper or not as this man left right away or if anyone else had cut themselves on it either. So yes he is worried that it may have been blood on the sheet or paper and that this man or someone else may have also got a paper cut on it or got blood on it some other way and he may have cut himself on the same place on the paper as where the blood was on the paper and then blood went into him. The earliest someone could have cut themselves or got blood on the sheet of paper would have been about 2 seconds before he got the paper cut. He said there were other people who had that sheet of paper during the day too who he was worried may have either cut themselves on it or got blood on it.
I have been onto the Mental Health team for all his panic attacks over things like this and I have told him that he was not at risk of HIV from the above event and he doesn’t need to go back to the clinic and get an HIV test for this either. My advice I am hoping for from you is would you agree with me?

HIV becomes inactive as soon as it is exposed to air and therefore is unable to infect you,HIV is not transmitted via fomities either and one final point.HIV transmission takes place inside the body not outside it.Your son is safe.

1.  NO your son was not at risk because you cannot get HIV from inanmate objects.  The only way you can get HIV is through unprotected anal or vaginal sex, sharing IV drug works, or via mother to child.

2.  No, no need to test when there was no risk.

Tell your son not to give it a second thought.

You posted inthe expert forum about a "needle stick" and your son. Is this really you or your son? Either it doesn't matter intensive therapy is needed for the true person this is happening to.

To address your fears and phobias about HIV.You need to educate yourself on how HIV is transmitted and how it's not.
