risk knowledge

hello doctor,

i am a 30 years old guy and i am quiet active sexually and always get tested for HIV every 6 months and by gods grace always practice safe sex and use condoms.

now i have doubt about certain ways of HIV transmission and i wanted to clear them with u and that is as follows..

i have been having unprotected i.e (without condom) handjobs at massage parlours alsmost half my life...
i mean atleast thrice a week i get massage and everytime i get a handjob and its always unprotected as i ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT IT IS NOT A WAY OF HIV TRANSMISSION.

I JUST WANT TO ASK YOU IS IT ACTUALLY NO RISK OF TRANSMISSION OR IT DOES POSE A RISK?

AS PER MY EXPERIENCE I NEVER CAUGHT HIV AS I HAD HANDJOBS ZILLIONS OF TIME BUT STILL WAS I LUCKY OR ITS JUST NO WAY OF TRANSMISSION...
THANKS AND BEST REGARDS

Welcome to the forum.  Thanks for your question.

Congratulations on limiting your non-monogamous sexual experiences to safe sex.  If I understand correctly, you always use condoms for vaginal sex, and otherwise only have sex in the forum of masturbation during massages.  These are entirely safe practices.  HIV and other STDs are not transmitted by hand-genital contact.

It's still wise to be tested for HIV from time to time, as you are doing -- not because of hand-genital contact, but in case of an undetected condom failure during riskier practices.  For the same reason, you should consider also having a urine test for gonorrhea and chlamydia and a blood test for syphilis; once a year would be about right.  Assuming no obvious condom breakage, you can expect negative results.

I hope this has helped. Best wishes--  HHH, MD

What more can I say than I already have?  Asking the same question in different words won't change the answer.  I already told you there is no HIV risk, and it is obvious from my reply that the nature of your partner makes no difference.  Do your best to accept the reasoned, science based advice you have had and move on with your life.

That's all for this thread.

"i hope these tests are warranted only for my vaginal exposures and not for handjob exposures?"

Correct on both counts.  However, condoms do fail sometimes -- usually you would notice, but to be safe I still recommend occasional testing for all fourL  HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea.
