I can relate to how you feel. I had twins 4 weeks ago and my husband cheated on me when I was 5 months pregnant. Fortunately, he tested negative 12 weeks post that exposure and my babies and I were tested at the L&D for HIV and those results were also negative. I feel pretty shaken up about that now but I'm over that fear and I've gotten smarter since then. Your test results are conclusive since that other sexual partner you had was long before you got married.
Pregnancy, in some rare cases, leads to a false positive or indeterminate result. The other negatives trump it. Your problem was that nurse.
I am talking about HIV. I mentioned my HSV 1 infection and my surgery to give a brief medical history. Hope this was not too confusing. You all give such great support and advice. I will let you know what my Gyno. said about his nurse's counceling skills and my future results during my pregnancy. This is such a great site and I can't thank you enough for all of your support.
That is awful for the nurse to say that. Bad bedside manner. You should tell somebody at the hospital/clinic what happened.
You are negative, don't worry anymore about HIV.
The nurse doesn't know what she was taking about. You are more abt to get an intermediate or false positive with being pregnant. That's far from saying one is positive or will be positive.
It's because biology (including human biology) changes daily. Who can keep up with it all? Only GWB and Jack from Lost; I don't know about anyone else. But you'd think, with something as serious and (at one point) public as HIV, that all doctors would be able to get it straight. However, I'm fully convinced that most MD's don't know their a$s from their head in terms of HIV; that's why you need to go to either a STD clinic/counsellor or an HIV specialist. They are the only ones who know what they're talking about because of the shear volume of cases that they have seen.
Lesson: Do not talk to/trust your avg MD or PCP when it comes to HIV.
Just imagine the amount of rediculous information that is being given out. Alot of people post here, but Im sure thousands more surf here everyday and never even create screen names, and we constantly see the posters here repeating the rediculous stuff that the people they depend on as experts tell them. It makes me loose all faith in our medical system. How is it that everyone that is a medical professional is not on the same level. Is it like you get your degree and never have to update your training? That is a scarry thought!
Neither can you be mildly HSV positive. You have it or you don't. You may have mild symptoms (oubreaks) but you are either an HSV carrier or not. Jeez, while the average person can give tests such as temperature and tell you if you have a mild (or severe) fever or whatever, no one should be able to give a test on something they no absolutely nothing about.
That nurse should be reprimanded for saying 'mildly exposed.' That's reckless, irresponsible, and just plain medically untrue. Especially while pregnant. I've seen repeated postings/articles/etc. that pregnant women have been known to produce false positives. Good luck with the baby, I'm sure you (and family) will be just fine...
Are you talking about HIV, or HSV? In the first part of your question, it seems you were talking about HIV. But then at the end, you are clearly talking about HSV.
mildly infected is same as mildly pregnant )))))
that nurse should go down
Thank you for your responses. I am definitely going to speak to my Gyno. about the way his nurse handled my situation. The more I learn and the more people I speak to, the more I realize that she really has no clue what she is talking about. I would not like to know that she is telling other patients with the same results what she has told me. Thanks again for your time and wish you all health and happiness.
You are 100% HIV negative
That nurse should be at least warned for saying the foul things that she told you.
Oh and BTW, How is one mildly exposed? If the virus gets into your system and begins to infect cells, it multiplies unimaginably fast. I could be wrong, but from what I understand, you are either infected or not. Mildly exposed does not have a place in HIV.
Teak. Does that sound about right????
I am sorry for what you have been through. I could not imagine having a medical pro tell me something like that. I think it is tragic that Doctors are so uninformed about HIV. False postives do occurr. You have tested negative twice after that, and I feel that you have no need for concern.
