Menstrual Blood on condom

Doctor...A little over 2 years ago I had a bachelor party and things got out of hand. I ended up having protected oral and protected vaginal intercourse with a stripper. I wasnt concerncmed at first but a few days after my mind started working. I then noticed a small scab on a finger that would have come in contact with a condom that had menstrual blood on it... I noticed it when I was going to remove the condom. it could have even been red lip stick..but odcourse I assume blood. I never inserted that finger..just worried that if it was bleeding during this act which I never noticed and if I grabbed the condom..should I be concerned? This was the only encounter I had with a female besides my wife..is this considered hand genital contact...do I need a test after the time elapsed? !I was watching carefully for any sympton the next few months afterwards...i was fine..but every now and them My mind starts working overdrive. Thanks Doc.

Couldnt take the wait for results...So I went to a health clinic for a 20 minute rapid test...and it was negative. Thanks for the reasurance. This was 2 years 2 months past exposure..figured I would share the results for people who end up in my position in the future. Thanks again.

Dr H your 100% right your words are reasuring but I took your advice and my Dr said hes going to give me Physchotherapy because ive been going back with all little problems all the time so hes testing me for everything. Your words gave me the courage to do it now im anxiously awaiting the results. Ive been doing alot of reading on this forum and I came across Dr Gonzalez post about menstrual blood compared to blood from a vein and he said that menstrual blood was just like vaginal fluid in terms of concentration...is this why menstrual blood doesnt significantly raise the risk.of sex without a condom during menstruation?if I have anything else ill start a new thread. I really am sorry for carrying on with this.

You state it very well.  You definitely "should have absolutely no concern blood or not".

I still recommend you be tested for its reassurance value.  It would be wonderful if my words settle all your concerns, but that usually doesn't happen.  Anyway, CDC recommends that every American (age 13-64) be tested at least once for HIV, regardless of risk.

Thanks for the fast reply. So basically if my penis was never in the vsgina without a condom on... I should have absolutely no concern blood or not? It would take an extroadinary event were there was alot of blood exchanged to have a risk? That will be my last question. Thanks again Dr.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for your question.

You had brief but accurate replies to this question on the community forum.  Even without a condom, sex during menstruation does not significantly eleveate the risk of HIV transmission.  And it is true that hand-genital contact, whether or not blood is present, carries no known HIV risk, even if there are recent cuts or nicks on the fingers or other exposed skin.  HIV is much harder to transmit than you might think!

However, despite the zero risk related to this event, I suggest you have an HIV test.  If you are typical of others with similar fears, my words won't completely remove all "what if" thoughts that will continue to swirl in your head.  A negative HIV test result will probably be more reassuring than anything I can say.  (This is not code to suggest I really believe there was some risk.  There was not.)

Don't lose any more sleep over this before you are tested or while waiting for the test result.  Your bachelor party was a non-event in regard to HIV risk.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
