Would Testing After 2 weeks prove anything?

Hi I may have been exposed to hiv virus. I cant stop thinking about it and it is messing up my life. I am getting getting depressed and cant focus on school or anything. Does that so called 10 day test work and is it provided by family doctor IE. would health care in canada cover it. Also would testing at 3 weeks be useful for normal hiv test. IE 75% accurate or over?

Neither test was brought up because neither are stand alone tests. Neither are recommended and they are expensive. One still has to wait 3 months post exposure to obtain a conclusive negative result.

Nobody's mentioned the p24 antigen test to this guy.  I'm in the same boat you are (worrying about HIV.)...And I'm no expert.  I actually came on here to ask for advice with my own situation.

The p24 antigen test should be done within 3 weeks of exposure.  They use it mainly to screen blood from donors, but it is offered as a test at some places too.  The only problem with it, is as Teak said, this will not give you a conclusive result.  From what I read on the net it is approx. 75% accurate in detecting if you have HIV or not.  False positives though are very rare.  Getting this test could worry you even more because I know I'd be wondering if I was in that 25% that it doesn't detect.

You can do an RNA test also for HIV which detects the actual virus in your blood. This test is that a small % can come back as false positives.  And it is very expensive.

One of the doctors on here said the antibody test at 4 weeks is 90-95% accurate as far as telling you for sure if you have the virus.

I'm not telling you to go out and get any or all of these tests, but just passing along some info.  As uniquelymen said, all but the smallest % of people will become HIV positive after having a modern negative antibody test at 4-6 weeks.

If you are that stress out, the earliest you should test is 4 weeks after possible exposure.

The average time to seroconversion is 22 days. All but the very smallest number of those who are going to seroconvert will do so within 4-6 weeks after an exposure.

A 12 weeks test result will be conclusive.

Keep us posted on your results and good luck to you. I'm expecting you to come out of this ok.

I would say that your risk was low, but would wait to get tested at 6 weeks at least. i think that you will be fine though

I just got a PCR test done. I dont know if 2 weeks is a bit late though and you might have to wait for antibody test.
