23 and had a TIA

I am 23 I dont have high blood pressure. But I had  a TIA in may. They did some tests to find out what caused it and found i have a PFO and also a bicuspid aortic valve. However, they said that i have to hand another stroke for them to do anything and i just have to wait for that to happen. I keep getting really bad chest pain and shortness of breath with everything i do. I am not overweight or anything. I am 5 '7 and weigh 145. I dont know what else to do but get a second opinion. Is there anything you know of to help?? please

A couple of months ago, my doctor suspected I had a stroke/TIA, and had a possible PFO.  I was immediately started on 325mg of aspirin and send for a bunch of tests.  The test results were normal, but during our discussions I asked the doctor about how to manage a PFO.  He didn't say anything about waiting for "2 more" events so I'm kinda surprised at that statement.  It could be common, it's just I've not heard it before.

Your doctor's approach on the BAV seems like a good one.  Other than having 2 cusps instead of 3, the valve is doing OK.  However, it seems that people with BAV have greater tendency to develop stenosis or regurgitation so he has a good plan to keep watch.  Try not to worry.....It could be years, or never that the valve stirs up a little trouble.  I've had a leaky mitral valve for at least 30 years (Hey, that's older than you are now....LOL) and I have it checked once/year.

Back to the TIA, what about a 2nd opinion?  You can also ask one of the cardiologists on the forum (Expert forums are listed under "forums" above, or scroll down and look on the right side).  Try posting your question under the Invterventional Cardiology forum....Maybe one of the doctors has some advice.

Good luck and let us know what's going on.......This is a great place for learning and for giving/getting support, so please stop back any time!   Glad you found us : )

ya thanks.

they have me taking aspirin 325 once a day everyday. they said that in order for them to close the pfo i have to have two more strokes. one for them to take me off aspirin and put me on coumadin and one after that to close the hole. but i am scared it is going to happen again. i keep getting very short of breath for everything just getting a glass of water and chest pain that comes and goes. the doctor said that for the BAV i have to get it checked every 3 years to make sure that it hasnt calcified or leaked. and sent me on my way. i guess im just scared that this will keep going and get worse while they just sit by. i mean is there anything else they can do?

Sorry about the PFO.

Are you on aspirin (or a blood thinning) therapy?  Any mention of closing the PFO?  What's the doctor's opinion on the BAV?
