Yes, I had an OnX aortic valve implanted in May 2000, so it's been over 10 years. I recall at the time I had it done, I was in a monitored group, as the product was still relatively new. I was, of course, given the option of the "ball & cage" valve, but was told by the surgeon that with my thin build, I likely would have a much more noticable "tick" than with the OnX. Plus, the design of the OnX would create much less turbulence, and thus less propensity for clotting. I have to say, I have not had a single problem, and have not had to adjust my level of Coumadin up or down in all the years since the procedure. Everything has been very stable, and I have absolutely no complaints.
Hi,
My husband has one .......... aortic valve replaced last July with it as well as having a mitral valve repair. He is in the study group - low level Coumadin for the next 5 years. We had been hoping he would be selected for the Plavix but wasn't a "Plavix responder."
Not had one myself, but seen patients in cardiac lab with them. I remember awhile back going, "what the hell, Ive never heard of an Onyx valve"...
I think it was Mayo clinic or Cleveland clinic the patient had it done.
My recollection is that it is made by the same engirneers who designed the St Jude valve that just about everyone has these days and I distnctly remember looking up the life expectancy of the mechanical valve and it was like 250 years before it wears out. I would suspect that the tissue around it would wear out well before the valve does.
Hope that helps
