Should my pacemaker be replaced?

My pacemaker is ten years old, has two leads. I am 68 years old. One of the leads has problem with the insulation and started to suck up too much battery so they shut it off. I have Sick Sinus Node and  AFib. The doctor wants to run the battery down before replacing it. There is supposed to be 4 years left on the battery, and I pace 35% of the time.

Yes, you need a lead revision. Along with the revision will come a new battery (Pulse Generator) most likely.

Good News is, the new system, with new technology; will probably last the rest of your life.

The likely source of your issue is a break in the insulation of the lead. Unlikely though it may be, leaving it in could theoretically result in a larger break in the lead and could even be serious to the extent shere you have a sharp broken metal wire bouncing around inside your heart. Noone wants to risk that.
