Shortness of breath

Hi,
I'm 46yr male and have some sort of condition which first occurred 6 years ago and has occurred more and more recently ever since.
I felt slightly uncomfortable on going to bed at night and then found my heart pounding heavily - not fast - just big, irregular beats that made my chest leap.  This was accompanied by a strange shortness of breath (difficult to explain but it was like my lungs were not interested in breathing, like the feeling you get if something realy bad is about to happen ) and panic attacks.  The first time this happenned, I look myself to ER and they did a number of tests - blood test, ECG, etc. and also a CAT scan of my chest.  When I first  got to ER I still had the symptoms but they slowly went away after an hour or so.  Nothing unusual was found.  After this I was fine for 6 months and then it happenned again one evening, and again I took myself to ER with the same results.  Since then it has been occurring more and more frequently.  It seems to be braught on by caffeine ( I avoid it now ), too much alcohol ( I've never been a big drinker but now I'm most restained ), over eating, but often none of these apply.  If they occur at night they usually last into the wee hours of the morning and I wake up shattered.
I cylce to work 3 days a week ( 40 min each way up and down hills ), which is more excersize that most of my friends get, but I was finding that sometimes when I was cycling I would just not be able to breathe properly going up hills ( again like my lungs weren't interested in working ), instead of my heart rate goin up it seemed to be going down.  The next day I would power up the hills at about twice the speed.  These episodes have been occurring more and more frequently until now they are the norm and I crawl up the hills every day.
These symptoms are also triggered by any sudden excersize - like going up a flight of stairs.
I've been to the GP who didn't have a clue. I've had dozens of blood tests and found nothing other than high iron levels.  This was recently diagnosed as a genetic condition which is a mild form of hemochromatosis ( can't remember it's exact name ).  I'm giving blood every two weeks ( started two months ago ) but this has only made the symptoms worse if anything.
I've googled plenty of cases where similar symptoms were braught on by stress or anxiety, but my anxiety seems to be braught on by the symptoms.
Any suggestions?

A long time ago I saw an episode of a show called Mystery Diagnosis on the Health Channel and it featured a man with hemochromatosis that was not mild. He had been a very healthy man and eventually he  got so weak he had trouble walking without leaning on something.
Maybe you should mention your symptoms to the doc that's treating you for hemochromatosis.
Just a thought.
