Working out with bicuspid aortic valve

My 16 year old adopted son has been diagnosed with Bicuspid Aortic Valve.  He plays baseball and basketball for the high school teams.  The Doctor tells us his only restrictions are, not to lift more than 1/3 his body weight, no pushups and no pull ups.  He must also take an antibiotic one hour prior to having any dental work done.  My son is about 5'8" and weighs 140 lbs.  He needs to add a little weight and do some considerable strength training if he is going to be able to compete in these sports.  Is there a weight and or strength training program specifically designed for young athletes with this condition?

You should follow the recommendations given by his cardiologist.  Most asymptomatic people aren't told to limit their activities except for heavy weight lifting which isn't ideal because of the potential for passing out.  Unfortuately, I think your son will have to stick to those recommendations.

This is nothing more than my personal layman's opinion, but I think doctors should place less emphasis on arbitrary limits and more emphasis on exercise techniques, i.e., not performing the Valsalva manuever when lifting.  I don't see the harm if he can lift his entire body weight without performing the Valsalva (I doubt he can, but just hypothetically).

Again, just my less-informed opinion.
