You should follow the recommendations given by his cardiologist. Most asymptomatic people aren't told to limit their activities except for heavy weight lifting which isn't ideal because of the potential for passing out. Unfortuately, I think your son will have to stick to those recommendations.
This is nothing more than my personal layman's opinion, but I think doctors should place less emphasis on arbitrary limits and more emphasis on exercise techniques, i.e., not performing the Valsalva manuever when lifting. I don't see the harm if he can lift his entire body weight without performing the Valsalva (I doubt he can, but just hypothetically).
Again, just my less-informed opinion.
