Ok from what I'm getting, after you smoked a cig, it was 163/79? If this is the case, yes I would try and get off the cigs, I know from experiance how hard this can be, but it will help the BP & your HEALTH. On the machine, how often do you change the batteries? Is it a wrist one? I always got a different BP reading with a wrist machine and I changed the batteries every 5 mths even if I felt they were still good, now I only use an arm BP cuff, I feel they are more accurate.

If you decide to quite smoking, GOOD LUCK , been there, still cheat, lol, but doing good

Getting off the cigs got me off one of my meds, lowering my med cost. Another way of looking at things, plus your health.

i think i just had a stressfull couple of days ive been checking it steady and now its staying at 130/80 to 135/81 night and day.i checked it right after smokeing and didnt wait as soon as i sat down it read 163/79 then i waited 3 minutes and it went down to 131/79 i think its time to stop smokeing if that helps bp go down thanks, and i do check it with an automatic machine ive had it  a year now do you think it might be in need of calibration?

Your blood pressure can can flucuate due to many factures, stress, weight, smoking, illness, ect.  I have had all the above and recently been working on quiting the smoking, I cheat evey now and then, but I have noticed great GOOD drop in my bp.  Do you have your own bp monitor?  If so, try taking your bp during different times, such as a stressed time versas non stress, etc.  could give you some ideas, and as stated from Jon, you still do need to seek the advice from your Dr. as bp can cause health problems.

Your blood pressure will start out at it's lowest point in the morning and tends to increase during the day. It will also fluctuate during the day depending on your stress and physical exertion levels at the time. 155/80 at night is fairly high as hypertension is defined as a blood pressure over 140/90, if either number is over it's high blood pressure. Stge I hypertension starts at 160/100 and you are not far from that 160 mark.

I would see my doctor for their opinion. Depending on your risk factors they may try to reduce it with life style changes or put you on a drug to lower your blood pressure. What you need to remember is that if it is that high at night it is most likely also running that high when you are under stressduring the day. Your doctor can decide what course of action is best. I'm on Benicar for my blood pressure and it is normally 110/70 in the morning and the same or lower at night, especially after exercise, and I have not had any side effects.

Good Luck!

Jon
