In my battle to lower my cholesterol levels, I had real problems with trigs. My LDL and HDL were at the recommended levels but my trigs were much too high and both my Cardiologist and GP seemed to be confused for several weeks over this. Normally (so I was told), high trigs are associated with alcohol consumption but I'm a non-drinker. I think they were assuming I was a secret drinker. In the end my cardiologist decided to attack cholesterol from a different angle. As well as taking drugs to lower lipid production in the Liver, they added a drug to lower gut absorption of fats. This lowered my LDL even further and my trigs finally dropped into the recommended zone.
