Rapid heart rate

I am 53 years old and was prescribe Atenelol in my late 20's, was experiencing rapid heart rate, dizziness and migraines.  I take 50 miligrams 2 x day.  I have experienced insomnia and depression for many years and now I have acute insomnia can't sleep more than two hours a night.  Last night I took two atenolols 100 mg and got the best sleep in a very long time. seeing my doctor on wednesday.  Please let me know if there is a better medicine.  I've had insomnia, depression and hynagogic dreams and I feel my adrenaline is pumping all the time.

Sometimes I take half a .25 mg. dose of Xanax to sleep, but only if my heart is fluttering and thumping around.  It helps.  I think you should definitely discuss this with your doctor.  That's quite an increase.  My bp drops if I take too much beta blocker.  Better safe than sorry.

I agree with "tom" assuming we're talking beta blockers.  In fact even selective BB usually prescribed for heart and blood pressure issues can cause dreaming problems - and I think some of your other symptoms.

I take an occasional generic prescription sleeping pill.  I can't say I give them a high recommendation, but they can help over rough spots for many of us.  I do not suffer from insomnia.  My doctor knows I take both beta blocker and calcium channel blocker to control my heart rate, yet did prescribe the sleeping pills.

so we're talking about 150 mg?  I wouldn't do that on a regular basis. Atenolol is not something you want to be "popping" like that.  If you do that for a few days in a row, you could experience unwanted side effects.  One of the side effects of the drug interesting is insomnia.  It also slows the heart rate and makes it slow to respond to respiratory demands.  The result is a heavy feeling oin the chest when you try to do any strenuous activity.  What you're describing are all potential side effects of the drug.  How fast a heart rate were you experiencing?
