ALT and AST are liver enzymes.  Normal reference ranges are typically between 0-50, so you seem to fall within normal range.

Usually the HBsAG test is given before or concurrently with the HBe Antigen.  HBsAG would test to see if you currently had the virus.  HBe Antigen REACTIVE indicates you tested positive for the HBe Antigen type.  Presence of HBe Antigen indicates a form of the virus that typically replicates more readily than the HBe Antigen NEGATIVE type.  Typical range of viral load for treatment for those that are HBe Antigen REACTIVE is 100,000 copies/ml.  Your doctor should also be testing you for viral load.

Based on your normal ALT/AST results, my guess would be that you are a chronic carrier, since acute cases typically see ALT/AST with elevated numbers.  These are just my thoughts.  Please follow up with your doctor to see what course of action he/she recommends for your blood results.

Doctor will likely run the required tests if he has not done so already.  If you are an acute phase, the only thing that you can really do is wait to see if your body can create it's own antibodies and fight off the virus.  If you are in the chronic phase, your body did not, and likely will not, create antibodies.  If you are a chronic carrier, it is generally accepted that the virus cannot be eliminated.

There is a vaccine available for Hep A and Hep B (not for Hep C).  If you recover from Hep B acute phase and eliminate the virus, some doctors may recommend getting the booster vaccine based on your antibody count.  Most people develop full immunity after recovering from Hep B acute phase, even without vaccine.

If you are a chronic carrier, the vaccine will generally not stimulate your body to create antibodies.  Chronic carriers are generally thought to have the virus permanently, although a very small percentage of chronic carriers (~1%) convert from HBsAG positive to HBsAG negative.  This is rare.

Although HBV can lead to liver related problems if left unattended, generally, HBsAG positive people can live full normal lives with no side effects from the HBsAG.  Take care of your body, and cut all intake of liver damaging substance (drugs, alcohol, etc...).  Exercise regularly and keep yourself fit.

It is recommended that your household and intimate contacts be immunized for HBV.

Also, open up the dialogue with your doctor and determine what he/she recommends.

Hope this helps,

Maxine, here's my interpretation.  It is to the best of my knowledge, so you should follow up with your physician for verification.

HBs Antigen Reactive - This verifies you have Hep B virus in your blood.  No determination on if this is acute or chronic unless this tests positive 6 months from now, OR you test for IGM HBc Antibodies.  Positive for IGM HBc Antibodies typically means you have had the virus for less than 6 months.  Since your ALT and AST are normal, my guess would be that this is not an acute infection.

HBc Antibody Reactive - This verifies you have had Hep B at one point in your lifetime.  That is all.

HBe Antigen Reactive - This indicates that, if you are a chronic Hep B carrier, this particular type multiplies more readily than the HBe Antigen Negative type.

HBs Antibody Non-reactive - This indicates your body does not have enough antibody to show up on lab tests.

HBe Antibody Non-reactive - This confirms the HBe Antigen Reactive test.  You will be reactive to either one or the other.

IgM Antibody for HepaA Non-reactive - Nonreactive result.

----

Please follow up with your doctor, and consult with him on what your next steps will be with testing.  I would imagine you will want to have a Hep B Viral Load DNA count to determine if you are in the reference range for treatment for HBe Antigen Reactive patients (>100,000 copies).

Please follow up with your doctor, and i would recommend you have him refer you to a liver specialist or a gastroenterologist.

hang in there,

hi
just had a hepa b profile and here are the results:
      HBs Antigen             Reactive
      HBc Antibody            Reactive
      HBe Antigen             Reactive
      HBs Antibody            Non-reactive
      HBe Antibody            Non-reactive
      IgM Antibody for HepaA  Non-reactive

what does these mean and what steps should i undertake

thank you for all the support.
finally here is what the gastroenterologists has to say about my case.

accdg to him, i am a carrier however i cant take the dna treatment since my ALT and AST is still on normal stage. so it will be useless to have any treatment at all since my body is still tolerating the virus.

i should have my ALT checked every month to test if it becomes abnormal then that is the time i can have the treatment. otherwise, nothing.

my question is how shall i prevent the virus from replicating then. is there any medicine i can take to help my liver or my body develop my own antibody?

even natural medicine is welcome

thank you all so much

maxine,

i am not a doctor, but if you are e-antigen positive, and your viral load is greater than 100,000 copies per mL then by general guidelines you would be a candidate for treatment in order to reduce your viral load.  i agree that testing your alt/ast every couple of months would be warranted, but it is typically not the only factor in the treatment decision.  i think typically you would take a viral dna test to find out the viral levels in your blood.  if you have low levels, you should be fine, however since you have e-antigen positive, there is a chance the virus is multiplying at a greater frequency than someone with e-antigen negative.  without this knowledge, in my opinion, it is hard to make an overall assessment of your status.

it has been documented that some of the medications do not work as well in patients who have normal alt/ast levels, but that is not to say that they DO NOT work in such patients.  i think it's important to research and to ask questions, so my recommendation to you would be to research the topic, and ask your doctor all of the questions you may have... keep asking until you are satisfied with the answers...

also, once you are a chronic carrier of hbv, the antibody vaccine is not effective in spurring your body to produce the antibodies.

hope this helps,
leeac

twit -- you mean you did that -- made that thread go on forever? You old computer whizola, you.  that's about when I discovered all of you hanging out down here last summer.  I thought it was a space anomily! (the long thread, not all of you...)

michellski -- ha ha you reminded me of my first smoke!  I was at girl scout camp between my junior and senior year of high school (yep --- I did the whole GS thing - graduated from GS when I grad from high school)  Anyhoo it was counselor-in-training camp and lasted a month.  They had dug us big girls a brand new spanking out house -- all ours.  Didn't stink or nothin'-- so a bunch of us started hanging out up there and the smokers lit up, and the rest in history.... we'd just sit in there on those open holes and lit up and talk up a storm.  Sure was fun.  You know how they treated poison ivy at that time?  Made us all sit on the side of the hill with a basin or water and and plastic scrubby like you use to clean dishes and break every blister open.  Sounds gross, but that scratchin sure felt good.

honey -- love the concept of the top feeders.  We'll have to do a lot of talking to get up there I think.

hey can do -- got to watch that fishdoc -- she might genetically enhance you...   oh and you are right about Chell - she is amazing.  Got thru all tx and didn't kill any of her girls!

Kathy..
Noooo.. LoL
I just put the counter on... Cindy & Phil allowed the thread to go on, & on... probably to keep me at the bottom (Which is WHERE I always preferred to be) but I eventually got into trouble down there too & it finally got closed...

That was when I was Bon Vivant...

That was kind of the Birth Of BF's.. LoL

I just appreciate them tolerating me as long as they did!
