You really just need to take a deep breath and prepare to do some research.  There is a lot that is unknown about Hep B and how to treat and when so we can't really give you an answer.  Educate yourself and then you and your family will have to make the decision that seems best to you.  Go to our Welcome page to help get you started.

If you are so concerned about your father having to take medication long term which is not without reason, you should seek a second opinion.  Maybe your father is stable enough now such that monitoring is what is needed now.

Do you have any idea how long your dad has been infected?

A liver biopsy is a good idea given his age.

Why are you worrying about stopping Baraclude?  You should not stop taking Baraclude unless you do so under the care of a physician who can monitor for a flare.  In some cases sudden cessation of antivirals will cause a viral rebound.  But, you're not planning on stopping like that are you?

All antiviral drugs are chemicals with their respective negative effects.  Other antivirals also have their risks when stopping.

That is why doctors recommend monitoring unless it becomes absolutely necessary to treat.

1.  liver biopsy will help the doctor know your father's liver status more accurately.

2.  If antiviral treatment is the route, Baraclude is one of the most potent drugs.

I think your father may be treated or just monitored depending on which doctor he has.

If you are hesitant about his current doctor's recommendation, have a second opinion.

Best.

Does your father show any symptoms?

2007 guideline suggests antiviral treatment when ALT is 2x upper normal and HBV-DNA is >2000.

You could get a second opinion from a hepatologist.
