Not to worry you or anything, but HIT THE FAN is right! Thats what happen to me about week 5, yea weeeeeek 5! Started 1st shot May 3, June 2 the stress began due to my Father having a heartattack. This Saturday will be shot 39. 9 to go. I am a lovely geno1A. Week 5 I had a drop in white blood cell 1.3. Began Neupogean and still doing it. Weight at start was 153, went to 135 off the bat. 1000 riba and never changed. Went UD week 12. My platelets have been tinkering back and forth, but no procrit. I have done very little excersise since about week 4. Now doing lite yoga a couple of times a week and some weight machines. NOT a lot of weight. No jogging or skating like before. I get winded. My doc. said no jogging straight up. Walking yes. I found out on time when I did try to skate. Lets just say my recovery level wasn't good! But heres the biggest issues for me, depression and skin problems. Sure I get tired and some flu like symptoms. Drink lots of water and I mean lots of water!!!!! Don't take hot baths and use lots of Goldbond! I can't eat spicy food or much meat. Fresh water fish has been good for me. Everyone is different but if you start having any problems you can get the answers you need here. This blog has saved my life and I may NOT be exagerating!
I'm getting this sick feeling that riba fanatics are about to pounce.
"Hey man, I told you need to take 1200mg in an earlier post." I find it surreal that GK thinks he gives marching orders when his credentials have never seemed remotely solid to me.
JT, post on the expert forum and ask Dr. Dieterich. There are different views about G2's and 3's and since you have such high SVR rates, the riba may not play as critical an auxiliary role as for G1's. In other words, you may have as good a chance at SVR with 800 as 1200. I don't know but on this board, things tend to lean toward the riba religion.
Hey man, I told you need to take 1200mg in an earlier post.
My Dr. prescribed 800mg for me, too. Good thing I educated myself on this forum. I had the Dr. assistant give me some extra sample bottles. Either get your prescription upped or ask for extra pills to make up for it.
I'm 188lbs at 6ft.
I'm assuming you are a geno2 but what do you weigh that you are only taking 800 - most docs are upping to weight based at this point. Even at 120pounds (went down to almost only 100 I was a walking skeleton) the doc still kept me up at 1000 (I had asked for extra one though)....(I was a geno1a 1b though) but you're a guy right I can't imagine you don't weigh anywhere around 100 pounds?
As far as the flu effects - I never got them until about week 30 then they hit out of nowhere.
I was fine the first few weeks until I had a full six point drop in ten days and began fainting dead away whenever I'd try to stand.
You do want to see some steady decline usually like Jim said as a predictor that the riba serum level is getting up there - once that starts to happen, you will know it for sure and long for those days where you thought you had no side effects. Believe me.
And if I was you I'd ask the nurse waht she means by your improving - did you have a two week viral load? A two week liver panel? Other than that I can't imagine whats she means that you are improving?
Call her and ask her to fax you those results anyway. You DO Always want to keep a copy of them and learn how to read them yourself....that way IF something does start to tank you will know right away to act on it. Sometimes docs don't get around to it for quite a while and IF you do get the anemia and need to start Procrit - every single day counts big!
Stay positive but be proactive!~
That would be 800mg of Riba, if your taking 4 pills they come in increments of 200 mg.
That's probably a total of 800 mg per day. Which may have something to do with the lack of sx's. But, riba concentration takes a while so there's still hope.
oh and I only take two pills in the morning and two at night not sure of the dose still
180 MCG of the pagasys as far as the riba not sure will have to look later
come to think of it, I also felt pretty good the first week of treatment before the sh*t the fan. still, weekly viral load testing prior to being UND is a good idea if your doctor will go along. takes a lot of the guesswork out of things, pinpoints your UND more accurately, and just generally provides more feedback for both you and your medical team.
I'm down to 188lbs. Started at 192lbs but that could just be from the dehydrating effect of the meds.
yes, 3 in the morning and 3 at night = 1200. That's what I'm doing, too.
Just did shot 3 earlier.. I feel fine so far.. the first shot i felt the flu like SX and it felt like a ton of bricks fell on my back..
hey granite im taking 3 riba pills in the morning and 3 at night...is that 1200mg?? its suppose to be weight base... On the bottle and pills it says 200mg on them... I hope thats enough mg.. Im in the telaprevir trial...
Oh good point: yeah I went walking up an incline and a flight of stairs; two separate occaisions and I was WINDED and my heart was pounding. So yeah, shortness of breath and HGB dropping is obvious. But If i'm not doing anything strenuous, then I don't notice it.
I'm doing shot 8 tonite and have felt pretty darn good for the past four weeks. Biggest complaint....like Granite, my eyes ache alot like I'm over tired or they've been dilated at the eye Drs. Never had the nausea and achiness early on...more energy than anything.
However, I've noticed a change in the past two days...more fatigue and I look tired...now have dark circles under my eyes. And I feel "stupid". I get through a full work day OK if no one is too cranky, but after hours, it's strictly chill time. I tried dancing last weekend and my heart was pounding wildly, so went back to just listening and tapping my foot. Still do 30 minutes of yoga each morning, but inversions may bite the dust soon. Something tells me my hgb is finally starting to drop......
So far, so good, but I feel a change a'comin'.
From what I've read, 30% of G1 patients experience anemia at some point during treatment. G1's are obviously treating for a longer period, so I would assume an even lesser percentage of G2's and G3's experience full blown anemia.
I'm 115 lbs and taking 1000mg riba. Have always taken the riba with food, mostly higher fat foods. Given my weight, I don't think my body could have tolerated a higher dosage of riba. Went UND somewhere around wk 14. Hgb has remained around 11 - 10.5 so not convinced you have to experience huge drops in hgb or anemia for riba to be working effectively.
How much riba are you taking per day?
I'm on 1200mg of Riba and in my 8th week. Getting ready to do shot 9 this Thursday night. I feel EXACTLY like you, JT. Hardly any sides aside from irritability and mild headache. Sometimes feel stiff and unmotivated.
No flu, no naseau, no anemia. Less motivated yes, but bedridden? Absolutely not. I'm hyper, but my eyes feel tired. I'm constantly thinking and moving though. I'm talking fast and feel great. My eyes feel tired all the time, though. Weird mix.
And I know I'm getting enough Riba because I'm UND at 4 weeks.
Jim is right - make SURE you are getting a HEP C VIRAL LOAD test at the end of 4 weeks.
SO IMPORTANT - my doctor didn't schedule it until I insisted.
I'd also be curious to see what your hemoglobin was before treatment and how it looks around week three. lack of anemia can suggest that you're not getting enough riba into your system. Bottom line however is always your viral load. If you were me, I'd ask for a viral load test no later than week four and preferably -- in addition -- I'd get one the day before your third shot which would be a week two viral load. That way, you'd know for sure if the meds are working.
Good I don't want any flu like symptoms I hope this is a sign of good things
If you did not experience flu like symptoms (interlukin storm) after the first shot you would not expect to necessarily do so on subsequent shots.
Anemia caused by ribavirin is gradual as it takes several weeks for serum levels to accumulate.
Don't worry that it is 'not working' as your blood results will demonstrate that is.
First shot hemo 15.7--3rd shot hemo 13.5--yep its falling. Just a matter of time before the fun begins.
I took my 3rd shot yesterday and nothing. First shot I had a slight headache for 2 days but I think it was from not drinking enough water. I increased the water and no headache since. One day I experienced some mild nausea and was okay next day. A rash developed on my arm one evening after getting out of the hot tub. I think it came from the heat and will not be enjoying the tub anymore. Other than that its been smooth sailing.
My nurse is surprised but keeps informing me things will change. Guess what, I believe her. From what I understand it takes a while for the meds to build up in the system. When the meds accumulate it could affect the blood counts and that's when the trouble begins.
For now just take advantage and enjoy every day we feel good. Who knows how we will feel on our 14th shot, 23rd shot, 35th shot, etc Chances our good it could be a whole different picture. I am hoping for the best, but definitely expecting the worst.
Did your blood test results indicate any change in your hemoglobin level?
