I believe it has to do with the liver. This is the first time I have ever checked out why my palms were red all the time because my doctor had no idea. In the 70's my job have me midnight **** and I always worked days. Found I couldn't sleep in the daytime so ended up not sleeping. Because of that I ended up with Hep B. By the time I went to the emergency room my eyes were a bright yellow and my skin was yellow. Also, my bowels were white. They threw me in isolation for almost a month and told me if I ever got it again my liver wouldn't make it. After reading up on reasons why I may have red palms I have to agree it has something to do with the liver. I am just happy to find a reason why they are like this. They are so red that people are always asking me why they are like that. It has to do with the liver.
Like Mre, says, it can be a simple skin condition, like contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, etc. ALL common on treatment. As Copyman said above, it's probably only meaningful combined with other clinical symptons. Don't freak out, talk to your doctor.
I've been kinda wondering about red palms too. I've never experienced red palms before (after having HCV for 24 years), but now that I'm halfway into treatment I've experienced temporarily a few times. It kinda freaked me out because I know they're associated with cirrhosis. But it was just a temporary flareup, they were reddish and itched alot. But then within a few hours it subsided. Lately haven't seen it return. I'm wondering if it might be a relatively harmless transient side effect of treatment for some people. As far as I know, I have minimal (F1) liver damage.
I googled red palms then got distracted by psoriasis, since I have that on one elbow.
Anyhow, Copyman is right, there is more than one cause for red palms. We with hepc think of the liver, but what don't we attribute to liver disease or liver tx? It's become a mindset. I have a painful big toe on my right foot. It's some kind of arthritic inflamation but I'm sure it's caused by my liver!
Copyman: When I looked up red palms, one of the websites was Medhelp and the quote they posted started out: copyman is right there's more than one reason for red palms... and it was an answer by goof referring to rosy palms not red palms, if you get my drift!
red palms can mean liver disease but also can be from many other things. red palms without other signs is not a sx of severe liver damage or cirrhosis. there would have to be other signs, enlarged spleen, low platelets, spider nevi, swelling of ankles/legs, etc,etc
Many moons ago, I lived for a year in Westport. I loved it but I had kids. We moved so they could go to school in Mendo.
So yes,I've been to the L.C.,to Usal and around to S.C.
I'm just out 128 near the county line at a friend's place. He used to be our sheep shearer! I still miss seeing sheep on the hills.
I find it interesting that my dr #2 noticed my red palms right off. This means severe liver disease, I believe. Although my bx and fibroscan showed no more that stage 1-2, I have red palms. Dr. #3 says maybe I have been leaning on something too long....Nah! I have no spider nevi, which is another sign, so why are my palms red? How valid are all these tests? Perhaps some of the liver is healthy and others not? biopsies only show one place, Fibroscans show perhaps 20 spots of the liver, therefore in my opinion is more accurate. So what is the meaning of red palms???
Good guess, LC. Have you ever been here? I am guessing that you are in the wine country or near Willits? Are you getting the wonderful rain? What a relief! i guess this should probably be on the other forum but....
Hi Ocean,
My doc in Bangkok showed me my red palms and said it was because I had liver disease. I think its just a sign that is obvious if you know about it.
BTW: I am still guessing whether you're at Big Sur or the Lost Coast. Probably neither. Enjoy the rain. OH
