Coffee - the Cirrhosis preventor

In yesterday's USA Weekend this is what they wrote:

"Coffee, even in very low doses, appears to protect the liver. Kaiser Permanente researchers found less Cirrhosis in heavy alcohol users who also consumed coffee.  Drinking less than a cup per day cut the risk of Cirrhosis by 30%, and 4 or more cups cut it by a remarkable 80%, compared to drinking none".

Excuse me while I grab another cup...

Where did snook find that 'enlightening' article? sounds like something from dr quack's now come buy my pills, site.  I have seen the same list of ailments in the placebo article! what a bunch of crock! not a single footnote to direct people to the 'studies' where they got their "facts"!
no match for what we posted, actual articles of actual studies!

that was a riot, snook! tell us where you got it, pretty please?

I just wanted to point out the possible harm that coffe MAY cause....Every coin has two sides.
Hope all is well with you and your feeling better after that infergen experience. Wish ya the best man!

I agree with you on this, from what I know, and my knowledge is, admittedly, not vast...the reason why coffee is so so good for ole liver is the mass anti-oxidants in it...but there is a lot of acid in it as well, might not be so good for the ole stomach and digestion process in mass quantities especially...I don't know that caffeine is good for anything, but it does wake you up...which prob isn't good for sleeping, unless you drink it at a long interval before retiring (I know there are some people who have a big resistance to it and are able to drink it before bed without any probs)...

I know I'll get holy h@ll for this cause I know there are many, many coffee drinkers here....but me personally, I wouldn't go hog wild with it, moderation is always best for anything (and I'm not suggesting that you don't drink it at all, just not a lot, someone always seems to get triggered and not see the subtle points, ha ha) it's also not supposed to be great for skin conditions due to the high acid...of course there are studies and then there are more studies...I personally get my anti-oxidants in a great many things I take and eat...just had some blueberries and green tea (low caffeine) not too long ago, lol....

I couldn't drink ANY coffee when I was on treatment. It made me TOO nauseated.  Even the smell of it bothered me.  About, a month off of it, I added in a cup of it a day, ONLY in the morning, or it aggravates my sleep problem, lately I've moved up to 2 cups a day, but then my stomach starts burning again. I also can't tolerate aspirin, NSAIDS, or anything spicy, so I'm not surprised on the coffee thing.

Dear Forseegood,

If anyone does the coffee enema, should it be 1 cup, or two?  Ha-Ha.  1 lump of sugar, or two?  Do you want creamer with that??  Seriously though, a plain water enema is just as effective.  I would still cleanse the colon. At least the bottom 1/2.  This topic is getting to poopy!!!

I'd like to stay out of this particular horserace...(this way spells d o o m...., ha ha ha) but I would like to expound on one particular point made in this discussion...I know members are starting to cringe when a post begins with "my doctor says..." but cringe if you must, lol...saw my doc a while ago and he told me what they are really seeing is the importance of clean bowels when it comes to this disease...they are thinking that the intestine is the biggest single purveyor of these little mites, which would makes sense to even my mind, laymen that I am....and that one of the single most important things a hep patient can do is to keep from being constipated...coffee enema anyone???

Here is just a little blurb of one article:

Caffeine depletes the body of calcium, so old people end up with
brittle bones and hip fractures. High intake of caffeine produces
symptoms such as anxiety neurosis, nervousness, irritability,
tremulousness, occasional muscle twitchings, insomnia, sensory
disturbances, tachypnea, heart palpitations, flushing, cardiac
arrhythmias, and gastointestinal disturbances, panic attacks,
chronic nervousness and irritability; digestive difficulties,
including heartburn, indigestion, and ulcers; fibrocystic breast
lumps; migraine headaches; and low blood sugar. It can lead to
increased risk of pancreatic and bladder cancers, and, as a heart
stimulant, is linked to blood-pressure abnormalities and
myocardial infarction, sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety,
increased urination, stomach irritation, fibrocystic disease
(benign growths) in the breast, and harm to a developing fetus.

In addition, caffeine is commonly added to various junk foods and
colas, so even little children are subjected to this drug at an
early age. And yet, the Medical Monopoly pretends with
hypocritical seriousness that they do not know the cause of such
things as panic attacks and unruly children. The physicians claim
that such children have some (fake) disease that they call
"Attention Deficit Disorder" which calls for drugs from the Pharmacological Monopoly. Even though they know from their
own research that caffeine has a direct irritant effect on nerves
and burns up our precious supply of thiamine, or vitamin B1, the
nutrient so necessary for tranquility; even though they know
this, they sell you anti-depressants and other drugs, instead.

All of this is just from the caffeine alone without counting the
effects in kidney, liver, digestive tract damage and cancer
promotion caused by the over 600 toxins found in a cup of coffee.

Having a bad day? Come here, tell ole snook all about it!!
Leave the political ranting at home..

As far as coffee, are you serious? Just run the google as I stated and read? The reason coffee is beneficial for the liver, or thought to be, is that it makes the urge for bowel movements. This is actually caused by the toxic reaction the coffee has with stomach acid, which in turn triggers the LIVER to create bile, in an attempt to flush the toxins out.So yes, in theory it does help bile production..
But you know what? How bout drinking a glass of water and using natures purist remedy as the flush? No need to bombard the body with over 600 toxins, pesticides, and contaminants found in imported coffee. Remember, coffee is a big import, and most of which comes from countries that use chemicals as pesticides that are not allowed in the US. And not to mention the health concerns of the main ingredient, caffeine.. Run the google, it's a good read.
I drink coffee myself, but probably twice a week if that.If you live in Miami, Cuban coffee is a MUST!!

Hey red wine is also beneficial for health? You advising everyone to go out and drink just because an article says to?
Come on, don't be a hypocrit!!

Just wanted to point out some down sides to coffee as well as well as the good, for a balanced, overall view....then people can judge for themselves what they want to do...if someone wants to drink 4 pots a day, it's their deal....But that doesn't make me a Republican....who cares how I voted? cept me...

and crimany, everything is up for debate around here...
